Instant euro transfers and payee check in Poland: 2027 deadlines
Short answer: For non-euro countries like Poland the EU rules start in 2027: receiving instant euro payments and equal charges on 9 Jan, sending and payee name checks on 9 July. Your bank may start earlier.

If you send or receive euro payments in Poland, an EU regulation is about to change how bank transfers work. The Instant Payments Regulation (IPR) requires banks to offer instant euro credit transfers and a free "verification of payee" check that warns you if the name does not match the account number. Because Poland is not in the euro area, its deadlines are later than those of euro area countries. This guide follows the European Central Bank (ECB) page on the regulation. The page carries no visible date, so check the deadlines with your bank before relying on them.
What the regulation requires
The ECB summarises the IPR, adopted by the European Parliament and the Council on 13 March 2024, as covering credit transfers denominated in euro within the EU. In practice, for payment service providers (banks and others) it means:
- Instant credit transfers: providers that offer sending and receiving credit transfers must also offer sending and receiving instant credit transfers (Article 5a).
- Equal charges: charges for sending and receiving instant transfers may not be higher than those for other credit transfers of the corresponding type (Article 5b).
- Verification of payee: providers must offer the payer a service to verify the payee before a transfer, for both standard and instant transfers, free of charge to the payer (Article 5c).
- Sanctions screening: providers offering instant transfers must check at least daily whether their users are subject to targeted financial restrictive measures (Article 5d).
Deadlines for countries outside the euro area
The ECB table gives separate deadlines for euro area and non-euro area member states. Poland uses the zloty, so the non-euro column is the relevant one:
- Receiving instant euro payments: 9 January 2027.
- Sending instant euro payments: 9 July 2027.
- Equality of charges: 9 January 2027.
- Verification of payee: 9 July 2027.
- Electronic money institutions and payment institutions: receiving by 9 April 2027 and sending by 9 July 2027.
- Instant payments outside business hours from accounts in the national currency: 9 June 2028.
For comparison, euro area countries had to offer receiving instant payments by 9 January 2025, and sending and verification of payee by 9 October 2025. The ECB page does not name Poland, so this is our reading of "non-euro area member states". Your bank may offer these services earlier.
What verification of payee looks like
The ECB explains that the service tells the payer about any discrepancy between the account identifier you entered and the name of the intended recipient. You get one of four results before you pay: "match", "close match", "no match" or "other". The purpose is to cut fraud and mistakes, for example when a scammer gives you an IBAN that belongs to someone else.
If you see "close match" or "no match", stop and check the details with the recipient through a channel you trust, not through the message that gave you the account number.
What this means for expats
Many expats pay rent, tuition or family abroad in euro. After the deadlines, a euro transfer from a Polish bank account should be possible as an instant payment, at a price no higher than a normal euro transfer, with a name check before you confirm. Before then, check your bank's own tariff and rules, because the ECB page sets deadlines for providers, not what each bank offers today.
Two limits are worth noting. The regulation covers euro credit transfers within the EU. It does not cover transfers in zloty, in other currencies or to countries outside the EU. And the ECB page does not say what amount limits banks may set for instant payments.
What the source does not say
The page does not mention Polish banks, the Polish Bank Association or the Polish financial regulator. It does not give fee levels. For how your bank is preparing, read its notices or ask customer service.
