Key Cutting in Poland: Spares, Security Cards and Car Keys
The essentials: Search for dorabianie kluczy, identify the key type and confirm permission and any security-card requirement. Agree the complete price and scope, keep the working original and test the new key promptly.

The Polish phrase for having a spare key made is dorabianie kluczy. It is useful when you need a second set for a flat, a spare bicycle-lock key or a replacement for a worn everyday key. But a shop that copies ordinary metal keys may not be the right place for a protected building key, an electronic access tag or a programmed car key.
The best first step is to identify what you need and who controls permission to order it. This guide uses operator, manufacturer and consumer-information pages checked on 27 October 2026. It does not recommend bypassing a security system or assume that possession of a key gives unlimited authority to copy it.
Decide whether this is a spare-key job or a lock problem
If you have a working key and want another one, ask about copying. If the key sticks, is visibly damaged or no longer turns reliably, explain that before the shop starts. A duplicate is not automatically a repair to the lock. Ask the specialist whether the key, cylinder or door needs attention rather than ordering several copies of a troublesome example.
If you are already locked out, that is a different request from a counter-service duplicate. Look for an appropriate locksmith service and agree the call-out scope and price before work begins. Contact your landlord, building manager or another authorized keyholder first when that could solve the problem. This article gives no instructions for opening a lock without its key.
For a rented property, separate the practical need from your permission to change access. Check your tenancy agreement and agree arrangements with the landlord or manager, especially for common entrances, managed systems or replacement cylinders. Do not treat a manufacturer's security advice as a ruling on who may alter your rented home's locks.
Explain the job without sharing access details publicly
A simple phrase at the counter is Chcę dorobić jeden klucz: I want one key copied. Add what it operates and whether you want one copy or several. Ask Czy potrzebna jest karta bezpieczeństwa? if you are unsure whether a security card is needed. You do not need to make a public social-media post showing the key's full details to ask where a shop is.
Bring the working key securely and avoid leaving an identifying address attached to it. If the shop needs further information, use its verified private contact channel. Treat security-card numbers, key codes and access credentials as sensitive information. Share only what the authorized provider needs for the job, and do not include a building's access details in a public review.
Before making a special trip, ask the chosen branch whether it handles that kind of key and whether a specialist must be present. A chain's general service page is not proof that every branch can complete every job immediately. Confirm local opening hours, lead time and collection arrangements directly for the branch you plan to use.
Ordinary keys and protected keys need different orders
Mister Minit's Polish service pages describe ordinary flat keys alongside more specialized types. They also say some less common blanks are ordered rather than held at the counter. That supports a practical distinction: an everyday copy may be a simple local job, while an unusual profile can require an order and another visit. It does not establish a guaranteed turnaround for your key.
For the protected keys it describes, Mister Minit requires the registration card when ordering a duplicate. ABUS likewise explains its security-card system as a way to control authorized duplicate orders through a specialist dealer. These are system and provider requirements, not a statement that every metal key in Poland comes with a card.
If the card belongs to a landlord, employer or building administrator, ask that person how to order a spare. If it is missing, contact the system's authorized route instead of looking for a shop willing to ignore the check. Ask which documents or authorization the provider needs and how collection works. Do not assume a photograph of a key replaces a required card.
Keep building access tags and garage remotes separate
Describe the whole access problem. You may have a metal key for the flat, a separate entrance tag and a garage remote. Even when they sit on the same ring, do not order them as though they are one identical copying service. Ask the building manager which items are managed centrally and whether new access must be issued or registered through the building.
For a remote, tell the provider whether it is broken, lost or simply needs a spare. Ask whether the proposed service is a housing repair, a battery replacement, programming or supply of a new device. The label 'pilot' on a Polish service sign does not tell you which of these tasks is included or which systems the branch supports.
If you lose an access item, tell the person responsible for that system so they can decide how to manage the risk. Having a new copy made and dealing with the lost item are separate questions. Do not assume that a new device automatically disables the old one, or that one manufacturer's optional security feature exists in your building's system.
A car key is more than its metal blade
Mister Minit's car-key page distinguishes finding and cutting the key, programming the transponder used to start the vehicle, and programming the remote control. It asks for vehicle information before a specialist quote. This is why 'the copied key opens the door' is not a complete test of a replacement that was sold as a working ignition key with remote functions.
Ask the provider to confirm compatibility for the actual vehicle and the exact functions included. Say whether you still have a working key, whether the casing alone is broken and whether the electronics still function. A casing replacement is a different order from a complete new programmed key, and a spare-key quote may not describe a lost-all-keys job.
Ask what proof of entitlement to the vehicle is required, whether the car must be present and when the work can be tested. Keep vehicle documents and key information private. Do not assume a general chain advert guarantees compatibility with your model. The operator's own page says a specialist assesses the vehicle type and production year.

Get a complete quote before work starts
Ask for the total for the agreed quantity and service. For an ordinary spare, confirm the blank and cutting are included. For a protected key, ask about order charges and collection. For a car key or remote, confirm programming and testing. If the provider cannot quote without inspection, ask whether that inspection itself costs money and when you can decline further work.
This guide does not give a national price range. The difference between a simple duplicate, an ordered security key and a programmed car key makes a single headline price misleading. An advertised starting price is not the final quote for your job. Ask for the amount and scope in writing before approving a more expensive or uncertain order.
For a call-out, ask about travel, evening or weekend supplements, diagnosis, labour and parts. Agree that additional work needs your approval. Clarify what happens if the locksmith arrives but the proposed work is not possible or you decline it. Do not assume 'quote' means a free visit or that replacing the whole lock is already authorized.
Check the result while you still have a fallback
Keep the original working key separate from the new copy. Test the spare promptly in ordinary use without forcing it, and avoid arranging the first test so that a failure leaves you outside with no other authorized access. If it catches or needs unusual pressure, stop and contact the shop. A difficult new copy should be assessed rather than made part of your daily routine.
For a car key, check the functions actually included in the order with the provider. For a building tag or remote, use the agreed manager or provider route to confirm access. Keep the receipt, job description and collection date. If you ordered several copies, identify them privately so you can explain which one is faulty without publishing access information.
Ask about the shop's correction process before leaving. Explain a problem precisely: the key does not enter, does not turn smoothly or fails the agreed electronic function. Do not mail away your only working key without understanding the return arrangements and preserving a workable access plan. A cheap spare is not useful if correcting it creates a larger disruption.
If there is a dispute, keep evidence and seek the right help
Contact the business with the order details, price, defect and the remedy you are requesting. Keep a copy of the complaint and the response. Avoid presenting a guarantee offered by the shop as the only possible basis for a complaint. Equally, do not assume that every locksmith service follows exactly the same legal route as the sale of a finished product.
UOKiK's complaint page explains consumer remedies for goods that do not conform to the contract. For advice on a mixed goods-and-service order or a disputed call-out, the government consumer-help page covers private purchases from businesses and points to consumer advisers, local consumer ombudsmen and Trade Inspection. Ask for help applying the correct rules to the actual agreement rather than relying on a generic deadline copied from another kind of purchase.
Frequently asked questions
What is key cutting called in Polish?
Dorabianie kluczy means having a key copied. Name the type of key and number of copies, then ask whether the branch can do the job locally or must order it.
Can I copy a protected key without its card?
For the protected systems described by Mister Minit and ABUS, the security or registration card controls duplicate orders. Ask the authorized provider or system manager what is required; do not try to bypass the check.
Can a shop copy every car key immediately?
Do not assume so. Compatibility, cutting, transponder programming and remote functions need to be confirmed for the actual vehicle. A casing repair is not the same as a new programmed key.
Does making a spare disable my lost key?
Do not assume that. Copying a key and managing a lost access item are separate jobs. Contact the responsible landlord, manager or system provider about the lost item.
What if the new key does not work smoothly?
Stop forcing it and contact the shop with the receipt, order and exact problem. Retain your working original and ask about correction. Seek consumer advice if the agreement or remedy is disputed.
