Ostrołęka Free Public Transport 2026: MZK Buses, No Ticket Needed
What to know: In Ostrołęka all MZK city bus journeys have been free since 28 October 2017 under a city council resolution. You need no ticket and no ID. Intercity coaches and trains still need tickets.

In Ostrołęka, a city of about 50,000 people on the Narew river in Mazovia, you do not pay for the bus. Since 28 October 2017 all journeys on lines run by MZK Ostrołęka have been free, under city council resolution No. 381/LIII/2017 of 5 October 2017. The official MZK price page confirms it, and it was still the only text on that page on 20 October 2026.
What free means in practice
You board any MZK bus and ride without buying or validating a ticket and without showing an ID, residence proof or a card. The rule covers all lines operated by the company, including routes that leave the city for neighbouring places. A local news portal summarising the MZK service in May 2026 lists lines to Rzekuń and Olszewo-Borki among the routes.
Because there is no ticket, there are no fines for travelling without one on these lines. Other transport in the area, such as regional or intercity coaches and trains, still needs normal tickets.

Where the buses go
The network links housing estates with the main points of the city. The route list on the news portal names the hospital (Szpital Specjalistyczny), the bus station (Dworzec Autobusowy), the railway station (Dworzec Kolejowy) and estates such as Osiedle Sienkiewicza and Wojciechowice. Line 1 runs from Osiedle Sienkiewicza through the hospital and bus station to Wojciechowice and the PGO. Line 6 connects Hallera, the bus station, the hospital, Prusa and the railway station.
For a new arrival, the useful chain is the railway station, the bus station and the hospital, which several lines share.
Practical tips
- Plan around the timetable, not a ticket: free buses still run on fixed schedules, so check the timetable for the day you travel.
- If you arrive by train, the railway station is served by several lines, so check the line numbers in the MZK timetable before you leave the platform.
- Keep a ticket for any intercity coach or train you take beyond the city, as those are not part of the MZK rule.
Timetables and notices
Timetables and the myBus app are linked from the MZK website, mzk.ostroleka.pl. The company also posts passenger notices there, for example on route changes during road works. Check the notices before travelling, because lines are sometimes diverted for a few days.
Why it matters for expats
If you live in or near Ostrołęka, the city buses cost nothing to ride, which removes a monthly cost that other cities charge, for example PLN 90 in Piotrków Trybunalski or PLN 120 in Nowy Sącz. It also makes it simple to get to work, the hospital or the stations without a car.
