Rzeszów's market square with the neo-Gothic town hall

Most travellers know Rzeszów, if they know it at all, as the airport city on the way to the Bieszczady mountains. The capital of Podkarpacie deserves better than a transit stop. Beneath its handsome market square runs one of Poland's most atmospheric underground routes, its museum of bedtime cartoons is the only one of its kind in the country, and the whole city has the energy of a regional capital on the rise. Two days here costs less than one in Kraków, and the crowds never arrive. The Lubomirski castle in Rzeszów, seen from the bastion walls in autumn

Getting there

Rzeszów sits in southeastern Poland, the natural gateway to the Bieszczady and the wider Subcarpathian region. Trains from Kraków take around an hour and a half to two hours, and from Warsaw around four to five hours, so the city pairs naturally with a Kraków trip or works as a standalone weekend from the capital. Rzeszów-Jasionka airport, one of the busier regional airports in Poland, connects the city with Warsaw and several international destinations. The station and the centre are a short walk apart, and once you arrive everything in this guide is walkable.

Rzeszów's confidence has an industrial backstory. Since 1938 the city has built aircraft engines: the local WSK works grew into a major aerospace plant, and the cluster of aviation companies around it, known as Aviation Valley, made Podkarpacie one of the centres of the global aerospace supply chain. That engineering wealth shows in the city itself, which has been one of Poland's fastest-growing regional capitals for two decades, with new boulevards along the Wisłok river, a handsome concert hall and a student population that keeps the cafes full.

Under the market square: the Rzeszów Cellars

The city's signature attraction lies beneath your feet. The Rzeszów Cellars (Rzeszowskie Piwnice) is an underground tourist route linking 25 historic cellars under the market square, some of them centuries old, along a path of several hundred metres that was stitched together and opened to visitors in the early 2000s. You descend near the town hall and emerge on the other side of the square, walking through brick vaults that once stored the goods of Rzeszów's merchants, with exhibitions on the city's history along the way. It is atmospheric, genuinely cool on a hot day, and the best introduction to the city you can get.

Tickets from January 2026: a guided visit costs 35 zł normal and 30 zł reduced, a family ticket (two adults plus two children) is 100 zł, and holders of the Large Family Card pay 17.50 zł. Tours with an English-speaking guide cost 45 zł normal and 40 zł reduced. If you prefer to go at your own pace, self-guided entry is 25 zł normal and 20 zł reduced. Book ahead at weekends in season, especially for the English-language tours.

The Museum of Bedtime Cartoons

Rzeszów's most surprising museum is also its most loveable. The Museum of Bedtime Cartoons (Muzeum Dobranocek) is the only museum in Poland dedicated to the dobranocka, the evening cartoon that has sent generations of Polish children to sleep since the 1950s. Inside you will find original puppets and props from Bolek i Lolek, Reksio, Miś Uszatek and dozens of other productions, screening corners, and interactive exhibits that let children make their own animations while their parents dissolve into nostalgia. It is small, perfectly formed, and one of the best family museums in the country.

Tickets are 16 zł normal and 10 zł reduced. The museum opens Tuesday to Friday 9:00-17:00 and weekends 10:00-18:00, and is closed on Mondays. Since May 2025, Tuesdays are free for individual visitors, which is the insider's day to go. Allow an hour or two; children reliably demand longer.

The square and the castle

Back at street level, Rzeszów's Rynek is a classic Podkarpacie square: broad, cobbled and lined with tenement houses in ice-cream colours, with the ornate neo-Gothic town hall holding the western frontage and cafe umbrellas filling the middle in season. The underground route explains why the square matters: this was a trading city on the Hungarian wine route, and the wealth of those centuries built the facades you see today.

A ten-minute walk away stands the Lubomirski castle, a 16th-century fortress rebuilt by one of Poland's great magnate families and ringed by bastion walls you can walk beside. One honest note: the castle has housed the regional court for decades, so you admire it from the outside and the surrounding grounds rather than touring staterooms. Nearby, the summer palace of the Lubomirski family anchors the city's prettiest park axis, and in season the multimedia fountain beside it runs free evening shows with music, light and water that draw what feels like half the city.

Two more landmarks complete the walk. The Bernardine basilica and monastery, a few minutes from the square, hold a rich Baroque interior and a much-venerated image of Our Lady of Rzeszów. And on the far side of the centre rises the Monument to the Revolutionary Deed, an enormous 1970s concrete sculpture of laurel leaves that has become the city's most photographed piece of communist-era art: brutal, unmissable, and oddly beloved. Whatever your politics, it is the selfie every visitor takes home.

With children

Rzeszów is an outstanding family weekend. The Bedtime Cartoon Museum is the anchor, and pairing it with the Cellars gives children a day that alternates between wonder and adventure: puppets in the morning, torch-lit brick vaults in the afternoon. The fountain shows make an easy, free evening finale, the Rynek has the usual ice-cream infrastructure, and the wide pedestrian streets are kind to buggies and small cyclists. If you have a second day, the Ethnographic Museum, one of the oldest in Poland, keeps a charming collection of regional folk art, and twenty kilometres away lies Łańcut Castle, one of the country's most spectacular aristocratic residences, with lavish interiors and a famous coach house.

For food, the streets around the Rynek and 3 Maja street carry the city's dining: milk bars and pierogi joints at the honest end, modern Polish kitchens and the region's first serious specialty-coffee scene at the other. Podkarpacie cooking leans hearty, and the local twist to look for is proziaki, soda-leavened flatbreads from the foothills, best eaten warm with butter or cheese.

A simple weekend plan

Saturday: arrive by midday, the Cellars route under the square, an hour at the town hall and Rynek, dinner on the square and the fountain show after dark. Sunday: the Bedtime Cartoon Museum, the castle walls and the summer palace park, then home. Rzeszów will surprise you: a city most people fly over, with more reasons to stop than cities three times its size.

Practical notes: the Cellars are cool year-round, so carry an extra layer even in August. The fountain shows run in the warmer months, usually at dusk on selected evenings, so check the current schedule when planning your Saturday. Rzeszów also makes a sensible base before or after the mountains: stock up here, because prices and choice drop off fast once the road climbs toward the Bieszczady.

A full weekend, easily. The underground route, the cartoon museum, the old town and the fountain shows fill two days, and Łańcut or the Ethnographic Museum covers a third.
