The supporting benefit (świadczenie wspierające) is a monthly payment for adults with disabilities in Poland. It is paid directly to the person with the disability, who decides how to spend it, and it does not depend on income. This guide explains who can get it, how the amount is worked out, whether foreigners are covered and the two-step application, using the Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Policy, the government plenipotentiary for disabled people and a voivodeship office. It is general information, not advice on a specific case.

What it is

According to the ministry, the benefit was introduced in 2024 as extra support directly for people with disabilities who are 18 or older. The person who receives it can decide what to use it for. It is paid regardless of income and can be used alongside other forms of support. The Poznań voivodeship office describes it as a monthly payment that partly covers the costs of increasing or keeping independence, including costs linked to special life needs.

Using it is optional. The person with the disability decides whether to claim it.

Who qualifies

The voivodeship office lists these conditions:

  • you are at least 18 years old
  • you live in Poland for the period in which you receive the benefit
  • you have a disability certificate or a certificate of inability to live independently
  • you obtained a decision on your level of support need from the voivodeship team for disability assessment (WZON), with 70 to 100 points

The right to apply for the support-need decision does not depend on the degree of disability. The WZON committee assesses what support the person needs to function independently, based on observation, a direct interview and an evaluation of how the person functions, not only medical papers.

The benefit is not available if the person is placed in a social care home, a family care home, a care and treatment facility, a nursing facility, a 24-hour care facility for disabled, chronically ill or elderly people, a prison, a correctional facility, a detention centre or a juvenile shelter. It also does not apply if the person is entitled abroad to a similar benefit, or someone else is entitled abroad to a benefit covering care costs for them, unless a bilateral social security agreement says otherwise.

How much it pays

The amount depends on the points in the WZON decision and is linked to the social pension (renta socjalna). The voivodeship office gives these shares:

  • 70 to 74 points: 40% of the social pension
  • 75 to 79 points: 60%
  • 80 to 84 points: 80%
  • 85 to 89 points: 120%
  • 90 to 94 points: 180%
  • 95 to 100 points: 220%

The social pension is 1,978.49 zł from 1 March 2026, according to the gofin.pl indicator page. Applying the shares to that figure gives these amounts, which are our own calculation and may differ by a few grosze from ZUS: about 791 zł, 1,187 zł, 1,583 zł, 2,374 zł, 3,561 zł and 4,353 zł a month. The government plenipotentiary's page published an estimated table in January 2026, before the March increase, and noted that the amounts would rise on 1 March with the social pension. The benefit is indexed together with the social pension, so the amount updates automatically.

Contributions

The ministry says ZUS pays the health insurance contribution for the person receiving the benefit, and for their carer if the carer does not work because of the care. If the carer does not work because of the need to provide support, lives with the person and runs a joint household, ZUS also pays the carer's pension and disability contributions, for as long as the care lasts.

Are foreigners covered

The voivodeship office says the benefit is due to Polish citizens and to certain foreigners. The list includes:

  • citizens of the EU, the EEA or Switzerland
  • people covered by a bilateral social security agreement that Poland has concluded
  • people with a temporary residence permit granted for the circumstances in article 127 of the Act on Foreigners, who live in Poland
  • people with a residence card marked "access to the labour market" who live in Poland, with exclusions such as those with a work permit in another member state for up to 6 months, people admitted for studies or seasonal work, and those who work on the basis of a visa
  • holders of certain other permits, including some permits for researchers and for intra-company transfers, with exclusions for short stays (the office gives 9 months for some categories and 6 months for others)
  • UK citizens covered by the Withdrawal Agreement articles the office names

The conditions are detailed and depend on the exact permit. Check your own permit type with WZON or ZUS before applying.

The two-step application

The voivodeship office describes two stages.

1. Stage one, WZON. Apply to the voivodeship team for disability assessment for a decision setting your level of support need. You can do this at any time. 2. Stage two, ZUS. Apply to ZUS electronically for payment of the benefit. You can do this only after you receive the final WZON decision stating the points and the period.

The ministry says ZUS handles the benefit and the application can be filed electronically through eZUS, the Emp@tia platform and online banking.

Timing by points

The office lists a phased schedule. Payment started on 1 January 2024 for people with 87 to 100 points, on 1 January 2025 for 78 to 86 points, and from 1 January 2026 for 70 to 77 points. The office also notes that a person with at least 70 points whose carer is entitled to a municipal care benefit can be paid already from 2024. It warns that because of the large number of applications, the WZON may send a notice extending the review time, and the date in that letter is only indicative, not the committee date.

Link with the caregiver's benefit

The ministry says the law introducing the benefit also changed care benefits. The caregiver's benefit (świadczenie pielęgnacyjne) now goes to parents and carers of disabled children until the child turns 18, with no limits on taking a job or receiving their own pension, and it is increased by 100% for each further disabled child.
