Unpaid ZUS contributions in Poland: interest, instalments, reminders

Short answer: Late ZUS contributions carry interest paid from your own funds. You can ask ZUS for instalments, and ZUS now sends payment calls in eZUS before a formal reminder.

If you pay social insurance contributions yourself, for example as a self-employed person, a missed or partial payment to ZUS creates arrears, and interest starts to run. This guide uses the Powroty page on arrears (published 10 June 2026, law as of 8 June 2026), the ZUS page on arrears in paying contributions (dated 1 January 2026) and a ZUS news item of 9 March 2026 about faster notices. We read all three on 19 October 2026.

What happens when you pay late

Both official pages say the same basic thing. Paying contributions late, in whole or in part, means you owe interest for delay, and you pay it entirely from your own funds. The interest is counted by multiplying the arrears for the month by the number of days of delay and by the current annual interest rate, then dividing by 365 times 100. The result is rounded to full zloty.

A point where the two pages differ

The Powroty page says no interest is charged if it does not exceed 1 percent of the minimum wage. The ZUS page, dated 1 January 2026, says interest is charged from 49.00 zloty. We cannot tell from the pages which threshold is current for your case, so check the ZUS interest calculator and your account before assuming a small debt is free. The ZUS page cites Article 23(1a) of the act on the social insurance system.

If you cannot pay in one go

The Powroty page says that if you cannot repay the debt in one payment, you can apply to ZUS to spread the arrears into instalments. The pages we read do not describe the conditions, the interest during an instalment plan or the documents needed.

New reminders for business owners

In its news item of 9 March 2026, ZUS says it now sends payment calls for the last month on an ongoing basis. The sequence is a message about missing payment, then a call to pay, and only if the payer does not react, a reminder (upomnienie). The messages go to the eZUS account of payers who have not applied for an instalment agreement. A call states the settlement month, the payment deadline, the amount and any interest, with an individual account number for payment. ZUS says it served over 3.1 million active payers at the end of the year and that more than 626 thousand of them had some debt on their account. In a region where the approach was tested earlier, about 20 percent of payers settled their debts.

ZUS also reminds payers that they can set up SMS or e-mail alerts in eZUS for new documents, so they do not need to log in daily.

Practical steps

  • Check your balance in eZUS and turn on notifications.
  • Pay the missing amount, plus interest, as soon as you see a call.
  • If you cannot, apply for instalments before things escalate to a reminder.

What the sources do not say

The pages do not give the current interest rate, instalment conditions, penalties after a reminder or enforcement steps. They do not say how contributions owed by foreigners are treated differently, if at all. The Powroty page lists the act on enforcement proceedings in administration among its legal bases, which suggests enforcement is possible, but it does not describe it.
