7 days of leave, 16 days off: Poland's Christmas 2026 trick

The essentials: Take 21-23 December 2026 off for 9 free days (19-27 December); 28-31 December for another 9 (26 December - 3 January); or all 7 leave days for a 16-day break, 19 December 2026 - 3 January 2027. Christmas Eve is a statutory day off, and the Saturday Boxing Day adds one employer-granted day.

Poland's 2026 festive calendar hands employees an unusually good deal: Christmas Eve and Christmas Day fall on Thursday and Friday, Boxing Day on a Saturday, and New Year's Day 2027 on a Friday. String the weekends together and seven days of annual leave buy you a 16-day break, from Saturday 19 December 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027. Here is the exact math, plus the rules that can make it even better - and the ones that can trip you up.

The calendar, day by day

  • Saturday 19 - Sunday 20 December 2026 - weekend
  • Monday 21 - Wednesday 23 December - working days (leave needed)
  • Thursday 24 December (Wigilia) - statutory day off since 2025
  • Friday 25 December (Christmas Day) - public holiday
  • Saturday 26 December (Boxing Day) - public holiday falling on a Saturday (this one has a bonus, below)
  • Sunday 27 December - weekend
  • Monday 28 - Thursday 31 December - working days (leave needed)
  • Friday 1 January 2027 (New Year) - public holiday
  • Saturday 2 - Sunday 3 January 2027 - weekend

Normal work resumes Monday 4 January 2027.

Three ways to play it

Plan A - the Christmas week (3 days of leave). Book Monday 21 to Wednesday 23 December. With the weekend in front and the holidays behind, you are off from Saturday 19 December through Sunday 27 December: 9 days for 3 days of leave.

Plan B - the New Year week (4 days of leave). Book Monday 28 to Thursday 31 December. With Boxing Day's weekend on one side and the New Year weekend on the other, you are off from Saturday 26 December through Sunday 3 January: 9 days for 4 days of leave.

Plan C - the full bridge (7 days of leave). Book all seven working days, 21-23 and 28-31 December. You are off continuously from Saturday 19 December 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027: 16 days for 7 days of leave. This is the plan to ask about early - half of every Polish office has the same idea, and leave around the holidays is granted on request, not by right to a specific date.

The Saturday-holiday bonus day

Here is the part many expats miss. Under article 130 § 2 of the Labour Code, every public holiday that falls on a day other than Sunday cuts your working time in the settlement period by eight hours. Boxing Day 2026 falls on a Saturday, so your employer owes you one extra day off - a full day, not eight shaved hours, as the State Labour Inspectorate (PIP) explains in its guidance. Employers designate that day themselves within the settlement period covering December; companies commonly pick 23 or 31 December, or a day in early January.

Two practical notes. First, ask HR now which day your company has designated - it can turn Plan A or B into ten days, or shave a day off Plan C's cost. Second, the same rule fires again next year: Christmas Day 2027 falls on a Saturday too. (15 August 2026 was the year's other Saturday holiday.) The Infor legal portal confirmed both 2026 dates in its 17 October 2026 rundown.

Rules that decide whether the plan works

How much leave you have. Full-time employees get 20 working days of annual leave with under 10 years of qualifying service, 26 days with 10 or more (education counts - a finished university degree is worth 8 years on its own). Our annual leave guide covers entitlement in detail. Plan C costs 7 of those days - more than a third of a 20-day allowance, so weigh it against summer plans.

Leave on demand. The 4 days of urlop na żądanie can be called on the morning of the day itself - but they come out of the same annual pool, and using them as a last-minute bridge is legal yet unpopular with managers in a busy week. Details in our special leave guide.

Old leave first. Leave carried over from 2025 had to be started by 30 September 2026 under article 168 - and PIP reminds employers that granting overdue leave is their duty, with the start date by 30 September enough. If you still have 2026 leave left in December, use it or carry it: 2026's remainder must be started by 30 September 2027. A Christmas bridge is a clean way to burn leftover days.

Your employer can also plan for you. If you do not schedule overdue leave yourself, the employer may order it - including into December. Some companies also run a collective shutdown between the holidays and simply deduct the days. Check before assuming the days are yours to keep.

Who this does not cover. B2B contractors and most civil-law contractors have no statutory leave at all - your "bridge" is whatever your contract and your client allow. Shift and weekend workers do get the Saturday-holiday compensation, but the day off lands inside their settlement schedule rather than neatly adjacent to Christmas.

If you work through the holidays

Not everyone gets the bridge. Shops are closed, but hospitals, public transport, hospitality, security and energy all run through the holidays, and their staff work holiday shifts. The Labour Code compensates them: work performed on a public holiday earns another full day off, to be taken within the same settlement period (article 151^11), and work on a Sunday earns a day off within six calendar days before or after that Sunday. If you are on a rota, check with HR which compensation day you are owed for 25 or 26 December - it stacks with the Saturday-holiday day, and both have to be scheduled, not banked forever.

Newcomers are sometimes surprised the other way: colleagues genuinely disappear. Between 24 December and 1 January, replies slow to a crawl, offices run skeleton crews and many small firms close entirely. If your work depends on Polish counterparts, treat the whole window as quiet time and front-load anything that needs signatures or decisions into the week of 14-18 December.

Making the break work in practice

  • Ask early, in writing. Holiday leave dates need the employer's agreement, and the 21-31 December window is the most contested of the year. Early December is already late for some teams.
  • Book travel before you ask. Trains out of the big cities on 18-19 December and back on 2-3 January sell out fast; PKP Intercity releases tickets about a month ahead.
  • Plan around the four closed days. Shops are shut from Thursday 24 to Sunday 27 December - see our guide to what stays open - so do the food shop by Wednesday 23 December.
  • New Year's Eve falls on a Thursday this year; our New Year guide covers the fireworks rules and what cities organise.

A word on Christmas 2027

If you miss the bridge this year, 2027 deals a similar hand: Christmas Eve 2027 is a Friday (statutory day off), Christmas Day a Saturday (which triggers the extra employer-granted day under article 130 § 2), and Boxing Day a Sunday. Taking Monday 20 to Thursday 23 December 2027 off gives a 10-day run from Saturday 18 December to Monday 27 December. Our 2027 public holidays guide has the full layout.

Frequently asked questions

Is Christmas Eve a day off in Poland in 2026?

Yes. Since 1 February 2025, 24 December is a statutory day free from work. In 2026 it falls on a Thursday.

How many leave days do I need for the full Christmas-New Year break?

Seven: 21, 22, 23, 28, 29, 30 and 31 December 2026. That gives 16 consecutive days off, from Saturday 19 December 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027.

What is the extra day off for a Saturday holiday?

Under Labour Code article 130 § 2, a holiday falling on a Saturday cuts working time by 8 hours, so the employer must grant another day off in the settlement period. It applies to Boxing Day 2026. Your employer chooses the day.

Can I carry unused 2026 leave into 2027?

Yes, but carried-over leave must be started by 30 September 2027 (article 168 of the Labour Code), and your employer can schedule overdue leave for you if you do not.

Can my employer refuse my December leave dates?

Yes - leave dates are set by agreement, and employers can refuse a specific window for operational reasons, though they must let you use your entitlement within the year. Ask early.

When should I ask for the December days?

As early as possible - October or November is normal for the holiday window. Leave plans in many companies are fixed by late November, and the most popular dates go first.

Do B2B contractors get this?

No. Statutory annual leave and the Saturday-holiday rule apply to employment contracts (umowa o pracę). Contractors negotiate time off with their clients.
