Christmas 2026 in Poland: what stays open 24-27 December

The essentials: Polish shops are closed 24-27 December 2026: Christmas Eve (a full trading ban since 2025), Christmas Day, Boxing Day and the non-trading Sunday. Open: petrol stations, duty pharmacies, owner-run Żabka, bakeries, florists, restaurants and station shops. Normal trading resumes Monday 28 December.

Poland does Christmas differently from most countries expats know: everything shuts, and since 2025 it shuts earlier than you think. In 2026 the run-up to Christmas ends with a four-day stretch - Thursday 24 December through Sunday 27 December - in which supermarkets, discount stores, shopping malls and most shops are closed by law. If you arrive from a country where Christmas Eve is a normal shopping day, this is the single most useful thing to know before the last week of December.

This guide lays out what closes, what stays open, and how to plan the week so the closed days are a curiosity rather than a crisis.

The closed days, day by day

Here is the calendar for Christmas week 2026, with the legal status of each day:

  • Sunday 20 December - trading Sunday, all shops open; the last Sunday of normal shopping before the holidays.
  • Monday 21 - Wednesday 23 December - normal trading; malls typically extend hours. Wednesday 23 December is the last full shopping day.
  • Thursday 24 December (Wigilia, Christmas Eve) - a statutory day off work with a complete trading ban. Shops closed all day.
  • Friday 25 December (Christmas Day) - public holiday, trading ban. Closed.
  • Saturday 26 December (second day of Christmas) - public holiday, trading ban. Closed.
  • Sunday 27 December - an ordinary non-trading Sunday under the Sunday trading ban. Closed.
  • Monday 28 December - normal trading resumes.

That makes 24-27 December 2026 a run of four consecutive closed days, and with the weekend structure there is no "quick morning run to the supermarket" on any of them.

Why Christmas Eve is now closed

For decades, 24 December was a working day in Poland and shops simply closed early - the trading law cut off sales at 2 pm. That changed with the amendment of 6 December 2024 (Dz.U. 2024 poz. 1965), which made Christmas Eve a statutory day free from work and amended the trading-restriction act at the same time. The new rules have been in force since 1 February 2025, so Christmas 2026 is the second year with a fully closed Wigilia. The old "open until 14:00" provision was deleted from the act - the 2 pm cutoff now survives only for the Saturday before Easter.

One trade-off built into the same law: December now has three trading Sundays instead of the usual two. In 2026 those are 6, 13 and 20 December - the three consecutive Sundays before Christmas Eve - when every shop may open normally. Our 2026 public holidays and shopping Sundays calendar has the full year.

What actually stays open

The trading ban has a long list of statutory exceptions, and they are what saves you on a closed day. Under article 6 of the trading act, these may trade on holidays:

  • Petrol stations - Orlen, BP, Shell, Circle K and others, with their shops; many operate around the clock. For emergency groceries, milk, bread basics and toiletries, the station shop is the classic Polish answer.
  • Pharmacies - exempt from the ban; in practice the duty-pharmacy rota (apteka dyżurna) governs who is actually open on 25-26 December. Every city publishes the rota; search "apteki dyżurne" plus your city.
  • Convenience stores run personally by the owner - the law exempts sole traders who stand behind the counter themselves. This is why many Żabka franchises open on holidays, usually for shorter hours. There is no guarantee for any specific shop - the franchisee decides.
  • Bakeries, confectioneries and ice-cream shops where that is the main business - many sell fresh bread on the morning of 24 December.
  • Florists, and flower stalls by cemeteries.
  • Newsagents and tobacco kiosks selling press, public-transport tickets and lottery products.
  • Post offices whose main activity is postal services.
  • Shops at stations, ports and airports, in the scope of serving travellers.
  • Restaurants, bars and gastronomy - hospitality is exempt (details below).
  • Shops inside hotels, hospitals, and culture, sport and tourism venues.
  • Online shops and vending machines - you can order, but couriers mostly deliver again after the holidays.

A caution that trips people up every year: an exempt shop may open; it does not have to. Chains announce their holiday hours in mid-December, so check the specific shop before you set out.

Żabka stores can open on holidays when the franchise owner works the counter personally - a common emergency-shopping fallback.

Public transport over Christmas

Transport keeps running, but on a changed rhythm, and every city publishes its holiday arrangements in mid-December. Last year's Warsaw announcements show the typical pattern. Warsaw Public Transport (WTP) ran a Sunday schedule on Christmas Eve 2025 with dozens of bus lines suspended, and from about 3 pm cut service further - the tram network shrank to a core of 13 lines for the rest of the evening. On 25-26 December holiday schedules applied. The 2026 notices will land around mid-December on your operator's site; treat last year's pattern as orientation, not as this year's timetable. In Gdańsk, the city notes its buses and trams run every day of the year, holidays included.

Two practical notes. Night buses and night trams keep running through the holidays on their weekend schedules in the big cities - useful after the midnight Mass. And 24 December is also the day many families drive across the country, so intercity roads are busiest from late morning; trains (PKP Intercity) run a reduced holiday timetable and the popular connections sell out well before the week itself.

Doctors, pharmacies and emergencies

Health care does not stop for the holidays, but it moves to its holiday skeleton:

  • Night and holiday care (nocna i świąteczna opieka zdrowotna) - duty clinics that work like a GP practice outside normal hours: evenings, nights, weekends and all public holidays. You can go to any duty clinic, not just your registered one; the NFZ's "where to get treated" search lists them by area.
  • 112 or 999 for anything life-threatening, and hospital emergency departments (SOR) for serious conditions. NFZ guidance is explicit that the SOR is for situations where life or health is directly at risk - for everything less acute, the duty clinic is the faster route.
  • Duty pharmacies - open on a rota; the schedule for each city is published by the regional pharmacy chamber and carried by local media in the days before Christmas.

Save the address of your nearest duty clinic and duty pharmacy before 24 December. Looking them up on a closed day with a feverish child is how expats learn this system the hard way.

Eating out, deliveries and parcels

Restaurants and bars are exempt from the trading ban, but Christmas is a family holiday at home, so the market answer is mixed: many restaurants close on 24 and 25 December, while hotel restaurants, some shopping-centre food courts (outside the malls' retail areas) and venues offering a special Wigilia menu stay open. Booking ahead is essential for anything on 25 December. Food-delivery apps work, but with far fewer couriers on the road - expect long waits or closed restaurants on Christmas Eve evening and Christmas Day.

Parcel lockers (paczkomaty) stay physically accessible, so a delivery that lands before the holidays can be collected any time. Couriers and post, though, pause: Poczta Polska branches and courier deliveries largely resume from Monday 28 December. If a gift has to arrive before Wigilia, order with days of margin - the last pre-Christmas week is the courier peak of the year.

For the evenings themselves: churches fill for the Christmas Eve midnight Mass (pasterka) and for morning Mass on 25 December, and city centres keep their illuminations and Christmas markets running - most of the big Christmas markets trade until 23 or 24 December and some reopen between the holidays and New Year. Our Wigilia guide explains the supper itself.

A simple plan for the week

1. Main grocery and gift shop by Sunday 20 December (trading Sunday) or Monday 21. 2. Fresh food - bread, carp, vegetables - on 22-23 December. Wednesday 23 is the last full trading day; expect crowds and early-emptying shelves. 3. Note your duty pharmacy and duty clinic before 24 December. 4. For anything forgotten: petrol-station shop, an owner-staffed Żabka, or a bakery on the morning of the 24th. 5. Travelling? Check your city's transport notice in mid-December and book intercity trains early.

After four quiet days, normal life snaps back on Monday 28 December - shops, couriers and all.

Frequently asked questions

Is 24 December a public holiday in Poland?

Yes. Since 1 February 2025, Christmas Eve is a statutory day free from work, added by the amendment of 6 December 2024. In 2026 it falls on a Thursday and carries a full-day trading ban.

Why are shops closed on Christmas Eve now?

The same 2024 amendment removed the old rule that let shops trade until 2 pm on 24 December. Christmas Eve is now treated like any other holiday under the trading act - closed all day, with exceptions.

Which Sundays are trading Sundays in December 2026?

Three consecutive Sundays before Christmas Eve: 6, 13 and 20 December 2026. Sunday 27 December is a normal non-trading Sunday.

Is Żabka open over Christmas?

Often, yes - but only where the franchise owner staffs the shop personally, which the law allows. Hours are usually shorter and vary store by store.

Does public transport run on Christmas Day in Poland?

Yes, on reduced holiday schedules. On Christmas Eve many cities cut services further from mid-afternoon. Your operator publishes exact arrangements in mid-December.

Where can I see a doctor during the holidays?

At a night-and-holiday duty clinic (nocna i świąteczna opieka zdrowotna) - any of them, regardless of registration. In life-threatening situations call 112 or 999.
