Warsaw Chopin vs Modlin Airport: Which One Should You Choose?

The essentials: Chopin (WAW) is the city airport: 24.1M passengers in 2025, 144 destinations, a 30-minute train to the centre on a 4.40 zł city ticket. Modlin (WMI) is Ryanair's base north of Warsaw: KM train plus a shuttle every 20-30 minutes. Pick Chopin for convenience, Modlin when the fare wins after transfers.

Warsaw's two airports: the short version

Warsaw has two passenger airports, and they are not interchangeable. Chopin Airport (WAW) sits inside the city, handles full-service and low-cost airlines alike, and reached a record 24.1 million passengers in 2025. Modlin (WMI), marketed as Warsaw/Modlin, is a single-terminal low-cost airport in Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki, north of the city, built almost entirely around Ryanair and serving about 1.5 million passengers a year. Booking sites sell both as "Warsaw", so choosing deliberately matters: the wrong airport can add an hour and a half to your trip each way.

Polish aviation as a whole is booming - the Civil Aviation Authority (ULC) reports Polish airports handled 66.1 million passengers in 2025, up 11.7% on 2024 - and Warsaw's pair of airports is growing with it.

Chopin Airport: the city airport

Chopin is Poland's biggest airport by a wide margin. Per the airport's own PPL statistics, in 2025 it handled 24,097,059 passengers (+13.2% year on year), with 32 scheduled carriers flying 144 scheduled destinations over the year. This is where LOT Polish Airlines has its hub, and where you will find most network carriers, connections to North America and the Middle East, and the bulk of business traffic.

Getting to and from the city is easy by design:

  • Rail: the underground Warszawa Lotnisko Chopina station sits next to the terminal, served by SKM city trains S2 and S3 and the RL airport line of Koleje Mazowieckie. Per the airport, travel time to the Centrum area is about 30 minutes, and a standard 75-minute city ticket (4.40 zł) is all you need - the airport is inside zone 1 of Warsaw public transport.
  • Taxi and ride-hailing: the airport quotes a typical taxi fare to the centre of about 50 zł; licensed taxis queue outside arrivals, and there are self-service Uber kiosks in the baggage and arrivals halls.
  • Buses and coaches: city buses stop right at the terminal, and a coach terminal in front of the south pier handles longer-distance buses.

The practical experience: land, walk five minutes to the platform, and you are on a city train with your regular ZTM ticket or even the monthly pass. For anyone living in Warsaw, Chopin feels like an extension of the tram network.

Chopin also works as a rail gateway beyond the city: the airport's own page notes direct rail links toward Sulejówek, Legionowo and Radzymin on SKM and Koleje Mazowieckie, and easy transfers at Warszawa Centralna, Wschodnia, Zachodnia and Śródmieście to trains covering the rest of Poland. If your final destination is Kraków, Gdańsk or Poznań rather than Warsaw, you can be on an intercity train within half an hour of leaving the terminal.

Modlin: Ryanair's Warsaw base

Modlin exists because of one airline. Ryanair is the dominant carrier, and in July 2025 the airport and Ryanair announced a long-term agreement that spells out the relationship: passenger traffic is planned to grow from 1.5 million annually in 2025 to over 5 million by 2030, with the Ryanair base expanding from 4 to 8 aircraft, up to 25 new routes (the first launching in 2026), over 600 new jobs, and terminal infrastructure growing to 8 check-in desks and 12 aircraft stands by September 2027.

If your ticket says Modlin, this is what the transfer looks like, per the airport's own travel page:

  • Train + shuttle: Koleje Mazowieckie runs modern Elf trains from Warsaw to Modlin station (stopping at Warszawa Gdańska and other city stations), with a dedicated Airport Ticket for the journey. At Modlin station, special airport shuttle buses in KM colours run every 20-30 minutes straight to the terminal entrance, timetabled to match train arrivals and departures.
  • Direct coaches: private airport bus lines run from central Warsaw to the terminal, timed around the flight schedule - useful for late and very early flights when trains are thin.
  • Long-distance trains: per the airport, selected TLK and EIC intercity services (for example Warsaw - Gdynia, Kraków - Olsztyn, Katowice - Olsztyn and Warsaw - Kołobrzeg) stop at Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki station, which makes Modlin reachable by rail from several regions without entering Warsaw at all.
  • By car or taxi, expect the drive to take roughly three times as long as the equivalent run to Chopin, depending on traffic.

One honest caveat for evening arrivals: the shuttle buses are matched to train times, not to delayed flights. If your flight lands late, check the last shuttle and last train before you board at the other end, or price out a taxi as the fallback.

The journey is entirely manageable but it is a journey: door to door, plan on about an hour or more between the centre and the terminal, versus roughly half that for Chopin.

Head to head: what actually differs

Time. Chopin: about 30 minutes to the centre by train, on a 4.40 zł city ticket. Modlin: an hour-plus combining train and shuttle or a direct coach, at a separate (higher) fare. For a weekend trip, the Modlin transfer can eat half a day across both directions.

Money. A cheap Ryanair fare from Modlin can still win even after adding the transfer - but do the full arithmetic: ticket price + transfer cost + transfer time, against the same route (or a nearby alternative) from Chopin. Two people travelling together change the math again, since transfer costs multiply while the fare saving stays fixed.

Network. Chopin offers 144 scheduled destinations across 32 carriers - full-service airlines, alliances, long-haul connections. Modlin is essentially Ryanair's map: European leisure and city-break routes, point to point. If you need a connection, a rebooking guarantee on one ticket, or a business-friendly schedule, Chopin is almost always the answer.

Schedule risk. A 7:00 departure from Modlin means a train or coach well before dawn - workable, but check that the first shuttle actually reaches the terminal before your gate closes. Chopin's early flights are a 20-minute taxi ride away.

Weather and winter. Both airports operate normally through Polish winters, but the Modlin transfer adds an outdoor wait at a small regional station; in January that is an argument for the direct coach or an earlier train, not for standing on the platform doing mental arithmetic about your gate time.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose Chopin when the fare difference is small, you are flying with luggage or kids, you need a connection, or you value the option of a normal city ticket home.
  • Choose Modlin when Ryanair flies your route direct, the fare is meaningfully cheaper after transfers, and your flight times sit comfortably inside train and coach hours.
  • For picking up visitors, check the airport code on their ticket before you set off - WAW and WMI are on opposite sides of the city, and confusing them is a classic Warsaw expat story.

Practical tips

1. Check the airport code, not the city name - both sell as "Warsaw"; WAW is Chopin, WMI is Modlin. 2. Your ZTM monthly pass covers Chopin - the airport is in zone 1, so the train there is just another city ride. 3. For Modlin, buy the KM Airport Ticket and check the shuttle timetable against your flight before travel day. 4. At Chopin, use the official taxi rank or the Uber kiosks inside the terminal; the airport itself warns against unlicensed drivers soliciting in arrivals. 5. Add 60-90 minutes of buffer for Modlin compared with the same departure time at Chopin. 6. Chopin's rail station is underground at the terminal - follow the train pictograms on the arrivals level; no shuttle bus needed. 7. If you fly often, track both airports' news: Modlin's Ryanair expansion is adding routes through 2026-2027, so the cheap option keeps getting better.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get from Chopin Airport to Warsaw city centre?

By train from the underground airport station: SKM lines S2 and S3 or the RL airport line to the centre in about 30 minutes. A standard 75-minute city ticket (4.40 zł) is enough, and monthly passes are valid. A licensed taxi to the centre costs about 50 zł.

How do I get to Modlin Airport from Warsaw?

Take a Koleje Mazowieckie train to Modlin station - a dedicated Airport Ticket is offered - then the KM airport shuttle bus, which runs every 20-30 minutes and is timetabled to the trains. Direct coach services from central Warsaw are the alternative.

Is Modlin Airport in Warsaw?

No. Warsaw/Modlin is in Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki, north of the city. Budget about an hour or more between central Warsaw and the terminal, versus roughly 30 minutes to Chopin.

Which Warsaw airport does Ryanair use?

Ryanair's Warsaw base is Modlin. Under a July 2025 agreement, the base grows from 4 to 8 aircraft with up to 25 new routes, taking Modlin from 1.5 million passengers a year toward over 5 million by 2030. * Photos: "Entrance to terminal A of Warsaw Chopin Airport" by PerpetualTraveler (CC BY-SA 4.0) and "Warsaw Modlin Airport" by Markus Winkler (CC BY 4.0), via Wikimedia Commons.
