Wilanow Garden of Light Cancelled for 2026/27 - Where to Go Instead

The essentials: Wilanow Palace has paused its Royal Garden of Light for the 2026/27 season - the first break since 2012 - to design a new concept. Warsaw's main light exhibition this winter is Lumagica's 'Colors of the Exotic' at the University Botanic Garden, open 7 November 2026 to 14 February 2027.

For fourteen winters, the Royal Garden of Light at Wilanów Palace was the fixed point of Warsaw's cold season: a million-plus bulbs woven through the baroque gardens, booked-out weekend slots, and the capital's default answer to "where do we take visitors after dark?" This year, for the first time since 2012, it is not happening. The palace museum announced in late October 2026 that the exhibition is taking a season off - and Warsaw's winter evening plans need rearranging. Here is what changed, what replaces it, and where to get your light fix instead.

Wilanów presses pause - on purpose

In an official statement, the management of the Museum of King Jan III's Palace at Wilanów confirmed that the Royal Garden of Light (Królewski Ogród Światła) will not open this autumn - the first break since 2012. The museum frames it as a working pause, not a cancellation of the idea: after 14 seasons, it wants to take stock of changing audience expectations and new trends in outdoor light exhibitions, and design a new concept that is "modern and engaging while remaining in harmony with the historic character of the Wilanów residence". The museum is also openly looking for partners to co-create a future winter event in the historic gardens.

In other words: no lights at Wilanów this winter, and no announced return date yet. If a relative visits in December expecting the usual stroll among the illuminated parterres, reset expectations now.

What Wilanów is doing instead

The palace is not going dark entirely. On 28-29 November 2026 the museum hosts its first-ever Jarmark Adwentowy (Advent Fair) inside the museum's Orangery, which it bills as the symbolic opening of the pre-Christmas season at Wilanów. It is a much smaller, indoor affair than the garden show, but it keeps a Wilanów tradition of a pre-Christmas visit alive - and the palace itself, the park walks and the permanent exhibitions remain open as normal. If you own an annual museum pass or simply like the grounds in frost, Wilanów in December is still worth the trip, just without the evening spectacle.

The heir apparent: Lumagica at the Botanic Garden

Warsaw's main light exhibition this winter is Lumagica's "MagicznyBotaniczny: Barwy Egzotyki" (Colors of the Exotic) at the University of Warsaw Botanic Garden, Aleje Ujazdowskie 4 - right next to Łazienki Royal Park. It opens on Friday 7 November 2026 and runs to Sunday 14 February 2027 - the sixth edition of the garden's light show, with an entirely new theme.

The formula will feel familiar to Wilanów regulars: over a million lamps shaping more than 40 light installations along the garden's paths, made by MK Illumination Polska. This year's route leaves Poland's native flora behind for a journey through distant climates: flamingos by a lagoon, a coral reef with colourful fish, monkeys in a tropical jungle, a panda, an elephant, palms and a desert alley of cacti - plus carnivorous plants (a Venus flytrap and a pitcher plant) grown to jungle sizes. A TUI-sponsored "holiday zone" with palms doubles as a photo point, and selected works by botanical artist Barbara Oozeerally get their own light setting - her first solo presentation in Poland.

Families get a proper activity layer: a virtual Traveller's Passport turns the walk into a riddle expedition with stamps and a small prize at the end. It is designed for children aged 4-12, though it works best when adults play along.

Hours, tickets and discounts

The exhibition is open daily except Thursdays, 16:00-21:00. Note the mid-season change: after 8 January the hours shorten to 17:00-20:00. Tickets:

  • 47 zł standard
  • 35 zł reduced - ages 6-26 with a valid student card, seniors 65+, visitors with a disability certificate (one carer also buys reduced)
  • 140 zł for a four-person ticket (any ages)
  • Free for children under 6 (no ticket needed)
  • Karta Dużej Rodziny (Big Family Card): 10% off, with the code KDR10 online or at the box office
  • University of Warsaw staff, doctoral candidates and students: one free entry per season, via a code from the MojeKontoUW system redeemed on the Empik ticket platform
  • 15% presale discount on tickets bought by 4 November
  • Groups of 15+ get 10% off the same ticket type

Tickets are sold online at lumagica.pl, in Empik stores, and at the on-site box office during opening hours. A named multi-entry pass and gift vouchers (for 2 or 4 people) are also available. One detail worth knowing: your ticket is valid for the whole reserved day, so arriving a little earlier or later than your booked hour is fine - but dates cannot be changed after purchase except by emailing the organizer.

Practical tips

  • Getting there. The garden sits at Aleje Ujazdowskie 4, a short walk from Łazienki. The recommended public-transport stop is pl. Na Rozdroże; the closest metro station is Politechnika, about a 20-minute walk. There is no guest parking at the garden; the nearest street parking is on Bagatela. Driving the Trasa Łazienkowska corridor on a December weekend is an exercise in patience - take the bus.
  • Timing. Early season has a bonus the organizers themselves point out: autumn leaves are still on the trees, and the golden crowns against the illuminations disappear as winter sets in. Weekday evenings right at 16:00 are the quietest.
  • Dress. This is an outdoor exhibition on garden paths. Warm layers and waterproof boots; paths are cleared and sanded but never salted (protected plants), so expect icy patches after snowfall.
  • Rules. No pets (toxic and protected plants), no bikes, scooters or sleds. Strollers and wheelchairs are fine on the paths except after heavy snow. A kiosk sells coffee, tea and something sweet on site.
  • Buy online. It skips the box-office queue, and the presale discount only applies to advance purchases.

Other winter-evening options

Warsaw does not run out of lights. The Old Town and Krakowskie Przedmieście get their Christmas illuminations as usual, and the Warsaw Christmas market behind the Palace of Culture lights up from 20 November. If you are heading to the coast, Gdańsk dresses Park Oliwski in free light installations each winter (last season they ran from early December into the new year; the city had not announced 2026/27 dates at the time of writing). And if you simply want the closest thing to the old Wilanów experience - a long, ticketed, after-dark walk through a historic garden - Lumagica's Botanic Garden show is the direct substitute, and it runs a full two weeks longer than Wilanów's January finish usually did, right up to Valentine's Day.

What to watch for

Two dates matter for next year. The museum's Advent Fair on 28-29 November will show how Wilanów handles festive crowds without the garden show, and the museum's search for partners suggests a redesigned winter event could return for 2027/28 - though nothing is confirmed. We will update when the museum announces the Garden of Light's new concept.

Cancellation confirmed against the Wilanów Palace museum's official statement; Lumagica dates, hours and prices verified against the University of Warsaw Botanic Garden's 23 October 2026 announcement and Lumagica's ticket page, checked 25 October 2026.*

Frequently asked questions
