Zgorzelec, on the Nysa Łużycka river opposite the German town of Görlitz, made its city buses free for everyone on 1 January 2026. The city transport site and the operator say rides on lines 3, 4 and 5 cost nothing, with no exceptions. This guide uses the official notices from the operator MPGK Zgorzelec and the city transport site bus.zgorzelec.eu, checked on 20 October 2026.

What is free

Rides on city bus lines 3, 4 and 5 are completely free for all passengers. You do not need a ticket, a card or a resident status. The buses carry the text "Komunikacja Miejska Zgorzelec – wsiadaj, bezpłatna komunikacja 0 zł", so you can recognise them easily.

The three lines complement each other. The routes and times of each line fill gaps in the others, and the lines run in turns depending on the time of day and the day of the week. When you plan a trip, read the timetables of all three lines together instead of looking at just one.

What did not become free

Line A, the cross-border connection between Zgorzelec and Görlitz, is not free. Tickets for it are sold in the moBILET app. If you cross the river to Germany by bus, buy the ticket before you board. The official site does not list the price of line A on the pages checked for this guide, so check it in the app.

New operator and buses

From 1 January 2026 the operator of public transport in Zgorzelec is Miejskie Przedsiębiorstwo Gospodarki Komunalnej Sp. z o.o. (MPGK). Three red buses of the Güleryüz make run on the city lines. The customer service office for city transport is in the same place as the paid parking zone office, at ul. Daszyńskiego 70/1B, 59-900 Zgorzelec.

Timetable changes from 1 September 2026

An updated timetable has applied since Tuesday 1 September 2026. The city says the main aim is to enlarge the area of the municipality served by city transport, and it also made small corrections to the times of some runs. Routes of lines 3, 4 and 5 stayed unchanged until that date. Buses run all week, with fewer runs at weekends.

Tips for visitors

  • Use the three lines together. Their timetables are built so that the lines replace each other at different times of day.
  • Plan weekend trips with extra time, because buses run less often on Saturdays and Sundays.
  • For Görlitz, use line A and buy the moBILET ticket in advance, as the free rule does not cover it.
  • Ask at the service office at ul. Daszyńskiego 70/1B if you need printed timetables or have a question about the lines.
