If you start a business in Poland, or work as a B2B contractor, you pay your own social security contributions to ZUS (Zakład Ubezpieczeń Społecznych, the Social Insurance Institution). They are a fixed minimum, not a percentage of your invoices, and they go up almost every January. This guide uses the ZUS notice of 30 December 2025, the ZUS report "Składki przedsiębiorców w 2026 roku" (February 2026) and the ZUS health contribution page, read in October 2026. It covers the contributions only, not income tax. For tax, see our guides to the PIT return and tax residence.

The 2026 numbers behind the contributions

ZUS states that the 2026 minimum wage is 4,806 zł and that the forecast average monthly wage for 2026 is 9,420 zł. The minimum contribution base for most business owners is 60% of the forecast average wage, which is 5,652 zł. According to the ZUS report, the lowest contributions on general terms are 8.6% higher than in 2025, because average wages rose quickly. The lowest preferential contributions depend on the minimum wage and rose 3.0%.

Group II: the standard (full) contributions

This group covers business owners who do not qualify for the reliefs below, plus creators and artists, people in liberal professions, and sole shareholders of a one-person limited company, among others. The base is at least 5,652 zł. ZUS lists these minimum monthly amounts for 2026:

  • Pension (emerytalna, 19.52%): 1,103.27 zł
  • Disability (rentowa, 8%): 452.16 zł
  • Sickness (chorobowa, 2.45%, voluntary for business owners): 138.47 zł
  • Accident (wypadkowa): 94.39 zł in the ZUS report's example. The rate is set each contribution year, so yours can differ.

On top of these come the Labour Fund and Solidarity Fund (FP/FS) and, separately, the health contribution.

Group I: the preferential contributions for the first 24 months

ZUS describes a lower base for people who run a business for the first 24 calendar months, with exceptions. You do not qualify if you ran a business in the last 60 months before the start, or if you work for a former employer who you did similar work for under an employment contract in the current or previous year. The base for 2026 is at least 1,441.80 zł, which is 30% of the minimum wage. The minimum contributions are:

  • Pension: 281.44 zł
  • Disability: 115.34 zł
  • Sickness: 35.32 zł (voluntary)

The report shows the accident contribution at 24.08 zł on these terms.

The start relief (ulga na start)

The ZUS report lists the "ulga na start" as no insurance and no contributions for the first 6 months. According to the ZUS contribution guide, you pay only the health insurance contribution, not social insurance contributions. The business must be your first, or started after a break of at least 60 months, and not performed for a former employer, as the Polish government's business pages describe.

"Mały ZUS plus" and the contribution holiday

  • Mały ZUS plus: low contributions calculated from your income, for up to 36 months out of the last 60. ZUS announced new rules for counting the relief periods from 1 January 2026.
  • Contribution holiday (wakacje składkowe): the ZUS report lists a break from paying contributions for 1 month a year.

ZUS notes in its report that the relief runway can last more than 5.5 years, and reduces contributions in that period by over 70%. ZUS also warns that lower contributions mean lower future benefits, such as pension and sickness benefits.

Health insurance is separate

Health insurance (składka zdrowotna) is paid on top, and its base depends on how you are taxed. ZUS says that, for business owners on general terms (scale or flat tax), the minimum base from 1 February 2026 equals the minimum wage, 4,806 zł, and the minimum contribution is 432.54 zł. For January 2026, the minimum base stayed at 3,499.50 zł and the contribution at 314.96 zł. The health contribution year runs from 1 February to 31 January. Taxpayers on a lump sum (ryczałt) have a different calculation, which the ZUS calculator handles.

The annual cap

ZUS gives the annual limit of the base for pension and disability contributions in 2026 as 282,600 zł. Above that limit, you stop paying those two contributions for the rest of the year.

Tips

  • Check which group you belong to before you register, because the 24-month relief has exclusions.
  • If you moved from employee to B2B for your former employer, the relief may not apply.
  • Use the official ZUS calculators for your exact month and tax form.
  • Compare the full cost of B2B with employment before you decide. Our take-home pay calculator covers the employment side.
