The 800+ Child Benefit in Poland: Rules for Foreign Parents (2026)
Short answer: Foreign parents in Poland can receive the 800+ child benefit (800 zł per child per month) if they live in Poland with the child, hold pension and disability insurance, and the child meets the schooling duty, ZUS verifies all three in state registers.

Poland's 800+ child benefit pays 800 zł per month for every child under 18, regardless of family income. Non-Polish parents can receive it, but since the rules changed they must meet three extra conditions, and the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) now verifies them automatically in state registers. This guide explains the current rules for foreign parents, as of October 2026.
What the 800+ benefit is
The świadczenie wychowawcze (parental benefit), known first as 500+ and since 1 January 2024 as 800+, pays 800 zł per month per child. According to the Ministry of Family's Q&A page, the programme is universal: it covers every child in the family until the child turns 18, with no income test and no limit on the number of children. For a family with two children, that is 1,600 zł per month; with three, 2,400 zł.
Two details matter for planning:
- If a child is born during a month, or turns 18 during one, the benefit for that month is paid only for the days up to the birth or the 18th birthday.
- If parents share alternating custody under a court ruling, in comparable and repeating periods, each parent receives half the monthly amount, 400 zł.
The benefit is granted for annual periods (okresy świadczeniowe) running from 1 June to 31 May of the following year. It is not renewed automatically: you must apply again for each new period.
The three extra conditions for non-Polish citizens
According to a ZUS notice dated 22 September 2026, foreign parents must meet all of the following throughout the entire period they receive the benefit:
- Live in Poland with the child. Both the applicant and the child covered by the benefit must reside in Poland for the whole payment period.
- Be professionally active. In practice this means being covered by pension and disability insurance (ubezpieczenia emerytalno-rentowe), which typically comes from employment, self-employment or a mandate contract with full social contributions.
- The child must be in education. The child must be completing the compulsory preschool year, compulsory schooling or the general education duty.
How ZUS checks, and why payments get suspended
ZUS does not take your word for these conditions: it verifies them in official registers. According to the same ZUS notice, residence in Poland is checked among other things in the Border Guard register, which records border crossings. Insurance coverage is checked in ZUS and the agricultural fund (KRUS) registers, and the child's schooling in the national education information system.
The most common reasons ZUS suspends the payment are:
- the Border Guard register shows the applicant or the child left Poland, with no record of return;
- ZUS and KRUS registers show no pension and disability insurance for the applicant;
- the education system has no record that the child is meeting the schooling duty;
- identity data (name, surname, date of birth, PESEL number) do not match across registers.
If your payment is suspended, ZUS posts a notice on your eZUS account (part of the PUE ZUS portal) calling you to provide explanations and evidence. You have three days from receiving the call to respond. If you deliver the evidence in time, ZUS resumes the payment from the month it was suspended, so nothing is lost. This is a strong reason to check your eZUS account regularly rather than relying on the post.
How and when to apply
Applications are online only. According to the government's digital services guidance, you can apply through:
- PUE ZUS (now being rebranded as eZUS),
- the mObywatel app,
- the Emp@tia portal,
- most Polish banks' electronic banking.
For the 2026/2027 period, which runs from 1 June 2026 to 31 May 2027, applications opened on 1 February 2026. The Ministry of Family explains the timing rules:
- Apply by 30 April and ZUS pays the June instalment by 30 June.
- Apply in May and the June and July instalments arrive by 31 July.
- Apply in June and the June, July and August instalments arrive by 31 August.
- Apply after 30 June and the benefit is granted only from the month of application, so you lose the earlier months of the period.
In other words, only an application filed by the end of June guarantees payment for the whole June-to-May period. New arrivals and parents of newborns apply as soon as they meet the conditions and receive the benefit from the month of application.

Practical checklist for foreign parents
- Make sure your work or contract puts you into pension and disability insurance, not only health insurance.
- Keep your PESEL and your child's PESEL data consistent across the civil registry, your bank and your employer.
- Enrol the child in preschool or school so the education duty is recorded in the state system.
- Remember that trips abroad are visible to the Border Guard register; long absences can trigger suspension.
- Monitor your eZUS inbox so you never miss the three-day deadline to answer a suspension call.
- Set a reminder for early February each year to re-apply for the next benefit period.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an income test for 800+?
No. The programme is universal: every child under 18 qualifies regardless of family income or the number of children, as long as the foreign-specific conditions above are met.
I am on a mandate contract (umowa zlecenie). Do I qualify?
The condition is being covered by pension and disability insurance. Most umowa zlecenie contracts include full social contributions, which would meet it; a contract with health insurance only would not. Check what your principal actually reports to ZUS.
What happens if my family travels abroad for the summer?
ZUS checks the Border Guard register. If it records a departure with no return, it can suspend the payment and ask for evidence that you live in Poland. Short holidays normally do not break residence, but be ready to document it if asked.
Do I need to apply again every year?
Yes. The benefit is granted for annual periods from 1 June to 31 May and does not renew automatically. Applications for a new period open on 1 February; file by 30 June to keep every month of the period.
