Breast Reduction in Poland: Costs, Recovery and Consultation

The essentials: Breast reduction in Poland is almost always private: the NFZ funds plastic surgery only for defects, injuries or disease, not cosmetic cases. The average price across 34 clinics is about 20,947 zl, surgery takes 2-4 hours under general anaesthesia with one clinic night, and full recovery takes about two months.

Breast reduction surgery (reduction mammoplasty, in Polish redukcja piersi or mammoplastyka redukcyjna) is one of the most common procedures expat women ask about in Poland, and one of the least understood. Is it covered by public insurance? What does it cost privately? How long is recovery really? Here is the practical picture for 2026, with verified prices and rules.

Why women choose the operation

Clinics describe the same profile again and again: very large, heavy breasts causing back, neck and shoulder pain, skin irritation and chafing under the breast, grooves from bra straps, numbness in the arms, and difficulty exercising or even doing daily tasks. Polish surgeons use a rough rule of thumb that breasts count as oversized when the difference between the bust and under-bust measurement exceeds about 22 cm, but the decisive factor is how the patient feels: if size causes pain or limits normal activity, that is an indication to consult.

The operation removes excess glandular tissue, fat and skin, reshapes the breast to fit the patient's frame, and usually repositions the nipple-areola complex. It is often combined with a lift (mastopexy), because reduced breasts can lose firmness - and that combination is worth understanding before you price-compare, because a reduction with a lift is a bigger operation than a lift alone, with more scarring and a longer recovery. Patients report relief from pain almost immediately, though the final shape takes months to settle.

The motivation matters for one more reason: when the driver is documented physical symptoms - back and neck pain, skin damage, restricted movement - rather than appearance alone, the conversation with both surgeons and any insurer changes. Write your symptoms down, with how long you have had them, before the first consultation.

Does the NFZ (public insurance) pay?

Rarely - and this is the single most important expectation to set. The Ministry of Health's rules on guaranteed hospital benefits state that plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures count as publicly funded benefits only in cases of congenital defects, injuries, diseases or the consequences of treating them. A purely aesthetic breast reduction is not a guaranteed benefit, so the public system will not schedule it.

Where a doctor documents a genuine disease picture - for example severe, treatment-resistant symptoms caused by macromastia - the case can theoretically be assessed within the funded basket, but in practice women in Poland overwhelmingly have this operation done privately. If you believe your case is medical, start with your GP or an NFZ-contracted specialist and ask for an assessment in writing, but budget as if you were paying yourself.

What it costs privately

Private prices across Poland cluster in a narrow band. The Kliniki.pl comparison portal, aggregating the price lists of 34 clinics and 51 doctors, puts the average breast reduction at 20,947 zl, with listed prices running from 10,500 zl to 30,000 zl. In Warsaw, where six clinics and sixteen surgeons list the procedure, prices run from 18,000 to 30,000 zl; published examples elsewhere include 19,000-21,000 zl in Kielce, 16,000 zl in Gliwice and 15,000-25,000 zl in Czestochowa. Named clinic price lists tell the same story: Klinika Mazan quotes from 24,000 zl, the Stachura & Drozd clinic from 23,000 zl, and one Warsaw clinic 24,000-26,000 zl plus 4,000 zl for general anaesthesia.

When comparing offers, ask exactly what the quoted price includes: the surgeon's fee, general anaesthesia, the overnight stay, post-op visits and the compression bra are sometimes bundled, sometimes billed separately - a low headline price with a 4,000 zl anaesthesia add-on is not actually low.

The consultation itself is a modest cost. Across 101 clinics and 109 doctors on Kliniki.pl, a plastic-surgery consultation averages 277 zl, and an online consultation about 250 zl - a cheap way to get two or three professional opinions before choosing a surgeon.

Planning the surgery in Poland as a foreigner

Poland is an established destination for this procedure, so the logistics for foreigners are well worn. English-speaking coordinators are standard at the larger private clinics in Warsaw, Krakow, Wroclaw, Katowice, Gdansk and Poznan, and many surgeons trained partly abroad - ask directly who will be in the operating room and who speaks your language, because the sales coordinator's English does not guarantee the surgeon's.

Bring your medical records, and bring them translated. Polish clinics require a standard pre-operative blood panel no older than their stated window, and if you have relevant history - previous breast imaging, chronic conditions, regular medication - have it available in English or Polish. Your regular prescriptions matter here: some, like salicylates, must be paused before surgery, and that conversation needs your full medication list.

Think about follow-up before you book. You will need the check-up at about two weeks and a breast ultrasound at three months. If you live in Poland, that is trivial. If you are flying in, either plan a return trip or agree a video follow-up protocol with the clinic before paying a deposit, and get the operative report and discharge summary in English - your doctor at home and any insurance claim will want them.

Finally, paperwork for reimbursement. If you carry private international insurance, ask your insurer before the operation whether breast reduction is reimbursable under your policy and what documentation it requires; Polish clinics issue detailed invoices (faktura) and medical documentation on request, but only your insurer can confirm its own rules.

How to choose a clinic and surgeon

Look for a doctor specialising in plastic surgery (chirurgia plastyczna) - a formal specialisation in Poland - not only "aesthetic medicine". Booking platforms such as ZnanyLekarz.pl let you filter surgeons by city, language and patient reviews, which matters if you want consultations in English; major private clinics in Warsaw, Krakow, Wroclaw, Katowice and Gdansk routinely treat international patients and advertise English-speaking staff.

At the consultation, expect the surgeon to assess skin quality and tissue volume, explain the technique and scar pattern for your case, and qualify or disqualify you for surgery. Ask how many reductions the surgeon performs a year, what technique they recommend for you and why, what the quoted price includes, and what happens if you need a revision. A trustworthy clinic answers these in writing.

The operation and the first two weeks

The surgery is done under general anaesthesia and typically takes two to four hours. Patients stay one night in the clinic. Sutures are usually dissolvable, with a check-up visit about 14 days after the operation. Before surgery you complete a standard blood panel - blood group, morphology, coagulation, electrolytes, glucose, CRP, liver and thyroid markers and viral screening - and you stop salicylate-containing medicines two weeks before the operation. Active infection, cold sores and menstruation are reasons to reschedule.

Recovery: the realistic timeline

Plan your life around about two months of restrictions. A compression bra is worn around the clock for roughly eight weeks. Intensive training - running, jumping, team sports - is off the table for eight weeks, cycling for two months, and horse riding for six. Scar care runs long: scar ointment and plasters from about two months post-op, continued for up to six months, with scars shielded from the sun. Clinics schedule a follow-up breast ultrasound at three months.

Most patients with desk jobs return to work after about two weeks, once the early check-up has passed. The full, final aesthetic result takes several months as swelling resolves and scars mature. If you are flying in for surgery, build in at least a week in Poland before flying home and confirm your clinic's follow-up plan by video call.

Risks to discuss honestly

Breast reduction is routine for experienced surgeons but it is still real surgery. The complications clinics themselves list are infection, visible scarring, loss of nipple sensation, difficulty breastfeeding later, and asymmetry. Breastfeeding is the point younger patients should raise explicitly: depending on technique, the ability to breastfeed after reduction can be reduced, so discuss technique choice if children are in your plans. A consultation with a plastic surgeon - not a sales coordinator - is where these trade-offs get settled for your specific case.

Frequently asked questions

Is breast reduction covered by Polish public health insurance (NFZ)?

Almost never for aesthetic reasons. Publicly funded plastic surgery is limited to congenital defects, injuries, diseases or consequences of their treatment. A documented medical case can be assessed, but most patients pay privately.

How much does breast reduction cost in Poland in 2026?

The average across 34 clinics is about 20,947 zl, with most prices between 18,000 and 30,000 zl. Check whether anaesthesia, the overnight stay and follow-up visits are included in the quote.

How long is the recovery?

One night in the clinic, a check-up at two weeks, a compression bra for eight weeks, no intensive sport for eight weeks, and the final result after several months.
