Dentist in Poland: What NFZ Covers for Free and What You Pay
Short answer: NFZ covers a defined set of dental treatments free, with no referral. You cannot pay extra to upgrade a covered treatment: anything outside the standard is paid in full.

Yes, you can see a dentist on the Polish public health system (NFZ) without paying, but only for a defined set of treatments. Anyone with the right to NFZ services can use it, you do not need a referral, and you cannot top up the price of a free treatment to get a nicer material. If you want something outside the standard, you pay for the whole service. This guide follows the Ministry of Health page on dental treatment, the patient portal pacjent.gov.pl and the Mazovian NFZ office. The legal basis is the Health Minister's regulation on guaranteed dental services (consolidated text in Journal of Laws 2021, item 2148). Check with your clinic, because waiting times and which services each practice offers vary.
Who can use NFZ dental care
Free dental care in the guaranteed scope is for every person who has the right to publicly funded health services. For most foreigners that means being covered by NFZ through work, a registered business, a family link or voluntary insurance. If you are not sure whether you are covered, read health insurance in Poland for foreigners first.
The Ministry says you can choose any dentist or clinic that has a contract with NFZ for dental services. No referral is needed. Ask the practice whether it has an NFZ contract when you book, and whether it is taking new NFZ patients, since many have limited places.
What you get for free
The official lists are close to each other. For adults, children and teenagers, they include:
- one dental check-up a year with oral hygiene instruction,
- three follow-up check-ups a year,
- intraoral X-rays,
- anaesthesia, as part of other guaranteed treatments,
- treatment of tooth decay with fillings,
- tooth extraction, for single-rooted and multi-rooted teeth,
- treatment of changes in the oral mucosa,
- removal of tartar. The Ministry page says this covers half of the dental arch, while the patient portal lists tartar removal and cleaning of gum pockets,
- root canal treatment, with limits described below,
- dentures, with limits described below.

Fillings
According to the patient portal and the NFZ office, "white" fillings are covered in the front teeth, from canine to canine in the upper and lower jaw. For adults this is a chemically cured composite. For the teeth further back, the covered filling is made of a capsule-type material. Children up to 18 get a fast-setting light-cured composite.
Root canal treatment
Adults are entitled to root canal treatment of the front teeth, from canine to canine. Children and teenagers under 18, pregnant women and women in the postpartum period (up to the 42nd day after birth) are entitled to root canal treatment of all teeth. The patient portal adds that this covers up to three canals in a tooth.
Dentures
NFZ covers a partial removable denture with bendable elements when five or more teeth are missing, and a full denture of the upper or lower jaw when there are no teeth. Dentures can be provided once every five years, and a denture repair once every two years. People who have had surgery for tumours in the facial skeleton can get dentures without a time limit.
Toothache and emergencies
If you go to any NFZ-contracted dentist or clinic with a toothache, you should be seen on the day you report. After 19:00, help is given at clinics that run an emergency dental duty. The Mazovian NFZ page says the same, and each regional NFZ office publishes where the duty clinics are. For a life-threatening injury, see emergency numbers in Poland.
No co-payment, and what that means
This is the rule that surprises people most. A treatment in the guaranteed scope is fully financed by NFZ and patients cannot co-pay. The patient portal gives the example that you cannot pay only the difference to get a white filling in a back tooth where the standard is different. If you ask for something outside the standard, you pay for the whole service, at the clinic's own price. Ask the practice to tell you before treatment which parts are covered, and ask for the price in writing if you choose a private option.
Children and school dental care
Children and teenagers up to 18 get more. The official lists include sealing the fissures of the first permanent molars once before the age of 8, and of the second molars once before the age of 14, varnishing of all permanent teeth no more than once per quarter, treatment of gum disease, and removable-appliance orthodontic treatment up to age 12. The NFZ office also lists preventive visits at 6, 9 and 12 months and at ages 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 12, 13, 16 and 19.
The patient portal adds that schools must ensure free dental care for pupils up to the end of secondary school. If the school has no dental room, it must sign an agreement with the nearest NFZ-contracted clinic, and the clinic should see pupils outside the queue. For other school rules, see school enrolment for foreign children.
How to find a clinic
1. Check the dental pages of your regional NFZ office, or call the patient information line 800 190 590 (listed on pacjent.gov.pl).
2. Call the practice and ask: "Czy macie umowę z NFZ na stomatologię?" (Do you have an NFZ dental contract?).
3. Take a photo ID. Registration is usually by phone or in person.
4. For anything outside the standard, ask for a written price.
