Spa Treatment on NFZ Poland: Referral, Costs, Once per 18 Months
Short answer: NFZ pays for spa treatment after a doctor's referral confirmed by the NFZ branch. You pay travel, part of board and lodging and a spa fee up to 4.24 zł a day; adults can go once every 18 months.

Poland's public health fund (NFZ) pays for spa treatment (leczenie uzdrowiskowe) and spa rehabilitation (rehabilitacja uzdrowiskowa) when a doctor refers you. You do not pay for the treatment itself, but you cover travel, part of the room and board, and a daily spa fee. This guide follows the Ministry of Health service page "Skorzystaj z leczenia uzdrowiskowego albo rehabilitacji uzdrowiskowej" on Gov.pl. The page carries no date, so check amounts such as the spa fee with the NFZ branch before you plan a stay.
Who can go
You can use spa treatment if you hold a referral from a health insurance doctor. The doctor who qualifies you takes into account:
- your state of health
- whether treatment based on natural healing resources is possible
- the course of the disease that is an indication for spa treatment, within the treatment directions of the spas
- the effects of earlier spa treatment or rehabilitation, if you have had it
- your ability to look after yourself and move independently, or to do so in a wheelchair
Contraindications
The page lists these:
- a condition in which spa treatment based on natural resources could make your health worse
- an infectious disease in the acute phase
- pregnancy and the postpartum period
- active cancer, and a period after treatment: 5 years for malignant melanoma, leukaemia, Hodgkin's disease, malignant lymphomas and kidney cancers, and 12 months for other malignant cancers, counted from the end of surgical treatment, chemotherapy or radiotherapy (hormonal treatment excluded)
How the process works
1. See your health insurance doctor. Based on an interview and test results, the doctor may issue a referral for spa treatment or spa rehabilitation. 2. Submit the referral to the NFZ regional branch competent for your place of residence. You can send it or bring it in person. The doctor who issued it can also send it. 3. The referral is registered and gets an individual number. If there are formal gaps, for example a missing clinic stamp, the NFZ asks you to complete it. 4. A specialist in balneology and physical medicine, or in medical rehabilitation, assesses whether it is justified. They also set the place, type and length of the treatment. 5. If the referral is confirmed, you go on the waiting list. 6. When your date is set, the NFZ branch delivers the confirmed referral to you, at the latest 14 days before the start of treatment.
If the specialist finds contraindications or no indications, the referral is not confirmed. It goes back to the doctor who issued it, and you receive written information. The page says this decision is final and cannot be appealed.
If the referral is not confirmed only because there are no places in the spas, the NFZ places it in the documentation and you are put on the waiting list.
How long you wait for a decision
The NFZ has 30 days to consider your referral, counted from when it reaches the branch. This can be extended by 14 days for procedural reasons. Adults can use spa treatment or spa rehabilitation no more often than once every 18 months.
The NFZ also runs an online referral browser, where you can follow the stage of a referral that has reached the NFZ.
What you pay
You cover:
- the cost of travel to the facility
- part of the cost of meals and accommodation in a spa sanatorium

For foreigners
The page speaks of a referral from a health insurance doctor and an NFZ branch for your place of residence. It does not discuss foreigners. If you are covered by NFZ insurance, ask your branch how the rules apply to you.
