Wawel Free November 2026: Kraków Tickets, Routes and Closures

The essentials: Selected Wawel exhibitions are free in November 2026 with limited entry tickets. Monday has a different free route and ticket-office-only collection. The castle closes on 1 November; 11 November uses an online-only special programme.

Visitors beside the historic buildings of Wawel Castle external courtyard in Kraków

Wawel Royal Castle has published its Free November 2026 programme, giving Kraków residents and visitors free access to selected exhibitions throughout the month. The offer is useful, but the weekly pattern is easy to misunderstand: Monday has a different route from Tuesday to Sunday, and the castle's normal paid attractions do not all become free.

The two dates to mark before booking are 1 November, when the castle is closed, and 11 November, when a special holiday arrangement replaces the normal schedule. Ordinary free tickets are released online a week before the visit, but Monday admission is handled at the ticket offices only. Here is how to choose the right day without mixing together different ticket rules.

Free admission still needs a ticket

Wawel says admission to exhibitions included in Free November is based on free entry tickets. These are available at the ticket offices on the day of the visit, with the offices open 8:45-16:00, or online with a week's advance release. The published programme does not give a daily online release hour, so do not borrow the 10:00 rule from Warsaw's Royal Castle or assume every royal residence uses the same system.

The allocation is limited both in numbers and time. One person may collect tickets for up to five people. For a family or a small group of friends, confirm the number and preferred date before starting the booking. A free ticket is not an open invitation to arrive on another day or enter a different exhibition.

For Mondays, the castle explicitly says free tickets are available only at the ticket offices, from 8:45 until the allocation runs out. This is an important exception to the general online option. If Monday is your only free day, plan around the same-day process rather than waiting for an online batch that the programme does not promise.

The programme describes ticket release rules, not live availability. A date listed below may already have limited spaces when you check. Use the booking links on Wawel's official website and read the actual confirmation before arranging the rest of the day.

Monday: the first-floor route

On Mondays, the free programme runs 10:00-16:00. It covers the first-floor Private Royal Apartments, with last entry at 15:00, plus Wawel Recovered and Międzymurze, both with last entry at 15:30.

This makes Monday a distinct choice rather than a shortened version of every other day. The Private Royal Apartments are in the free Monday offer, but the first-floor route is listed as paid from Tuesday to Sunday. If those apartments are the main reason for your visit and you want to use the free programme, Monday is the day to investigate.

Do not confuse ticket-office opening with exhibition opening. Being able to collect a ticket from 8:45 does not mean you can enter the Monday exhibition at that time. Equally, the 16:00 closing time is not a last-admission time. The apartments stop accepting visitors an hour before closing.

For a low-pressure outing, pick the exhibition you most want to see first and leave other stops optional. Collecting several tickets does not create enough time to use them all if their last-entry deadlines overlap.

Tuesday to Sunday: state rooms and castle underground

The main Tuesday-to-Sunday free offer runs 9:00-17:00. On the second floor, it includes the State Rooms and Turkish Tents, with last entry at 16:00. The second-floor ticket also gives access to the temporary exhibitions named in the programme, subject to their individual opening dates.

The castle underground offer includes Lost Wawel and the Lapidarium, with last entry at 16:10. Międzymurze is also in the free programme, with last entry at 16:30. These names are useful to keep in Polish on your phone because the booking screen and signs may use the museum's own route labels.

The practical point is that the free campaign covers named exhibitions, not every door on Wawel Hill. Decide whether you want the royal interiors, the underground route or a combination that fits the available admission times. Read each ticket rather than assuming one ticket automatically covers every free exhibition.

The programme does not promise an unrestricted all-day pass or guaranteed entry to a second route after finishing the first. If a booking screen assigns a time, organise your arrival around that time and the museum's current instructions.

Temporary exhibitions have different start dates

The second-floor ticket includes Anna Jagiellonka: All the Queen's Faces. Wawel describes the exhibition as a fresh look at Anna Jagiellonka as a ruler, patron and guardian of the Jagiellonian legacy, rather than only a figure connected to better-known relatives.

Ecstasies: Bernini at Wawel joins the programme from Friday, 6 November 2026. The museum describes it as a presentation connected with emotional and spiritual experience in early modern sculpture, including works associated with Bernini's Ecstasy of Saint Teresa. An early-November visit before the opening date should not be planned around that exhibition.

The presentation of Johannes Vermeer's Woman with a Pearl Necklace begins on Friday, 27 November 2026. The castle identifies the painting as a loan from Berlin's Gemäldegalerie. For a visit during Free November, that leaves the final days of the month, rather than the whole month, to see it under the published campaign arrangements.

If one temporary exhibition is your priority, choose the date first and check the ticket description again before confirming. The fact that an exhibition appears on the November programme does not mean it is open on 2 November, nor that an earlier ticket becomes valid for a later visit.

1 November: castle closed

Wawel explicitly says the castle is closed on Sunday, 1 November 2026. Do not plan an interior visit that day merely because the campaign is called Free November. The closure overrides the ordinary Sunday exhibition pattern.

If visiting Kraków over that weekend, separate the castle plan from other activities. Check the opening arrangements of each place independently, especially around the public holiday. This article's Wawel schedule does not establish the opening hours of the cathedral, nearby museums, restaurants or public transport.

For the first campaign Monday, 2 November, the Monday ticket-office-only rule remains the relevant published route. The castle's information does not promise that tickets will remain available until the end of the day.

11 November: online tickets only and fewer routes

Wednesday, 11 November 2026 has a special 9:00-17:00 opening. The second floor of the castle is open, with last entry at 16:00, and the Armoury is open, with last entry at 16:30. The programme says the other exhibitions are closed that day.

The ticket offices are also closed. Free tickets for this holiday visit are available online only, so the usual same-day ticket-office fallback does not apply. Secure the relevant ticket before travelling and check that it names 11 November rather than another Wednesday.

The Armoury's free holiday admission is a specific exception. It should not be described as free for all of November. If the Armoury is the attraction you most want to see without buying an ordinary ticket, investigate this date while remembering that the online allocation is limited.

What remains paid

From Tuesday to Sunday, the first-floor route covering the Private Royal Apartments and Wawel Recovered remains paid under the programme. Wawel lists ordinary tickets at 57 zł and reduced tickets at 43 zł for that route. Its ticket also includes the temporary exhibitions specified on the official programme, with some starting later in November.

The Crown Treasury remains paid, listed at 47 zł ordinary and 35 zł reduced. The Armoury is listed at the same prices, except for its free 11 November arrangement. Reduced prices are not automatic for every visitor; check eligibility and any required proof before selecting one.

These are the prices published in the campaign information checked for this guide, not a promise about every ticket combination or future change. To keep the visit free, choose the explicitly included routes and avoid adding paid exhibitions or services without checking the total.

Audio guides, language and group visits

The castle says audio guides are free for the exhibitions included in the offer, except Ecstasies: Bernini at Wawel. The programme does not specify the available languages for every exhibition. English-speaking visitors should check the exact route's audio-guide or visitor information rather than treating an English-language article as evidence of English commentary everywhere.

Group reservations are compulsory. Individual and group reservations for campaign exhibitions are available only in a limited form when visiting with a guide, through the castle's reservation office. The number of bookable dates is limited, and the normal payment rules for individually ordered guiding services remain unchanged.

That is different from collecting ordinary free entry tickets. If organising a workplace outing or a larger group, contact the reservation office linked from the official programme and explain the group size and language needs. Do not assume that splitting a group into several five-person ticket collections replaces the museum's group rules.

For anyone with mobility needs, ask about the specific exhibition route before booking. First-floor rooms, underground exhibitions and routes around a historic castle are different visits. This programme does not establish step-free access to every space or the suitability of every route for a pushchair.

A short plan before you leave

Choose the date, identify whether it uses the Monday, ordinary Tuesday-to-Sunday or 11 November rules, and select the route you actually want. Check the last-entry time, save the confirmation and leave time to find the correct entrance. Keep any paid extras separate from your free ticket choice.

The most useful habit is to recheck the official programme and booking screen close to the visit. Free November reduces the admission cost for selected exhibitions; it does not remove capacity limits, special closures or the need to choose the right ticket.
