ZUS Contributions in Poland 2026: Who Pays What
Short answer: On a Polish employment contract, 13.71% of gross pay goes to social insurance (pension 9.76%, disability 1.5%, sickness 2.45%) plus 9% health insurance. The employer pays roughly 18-20% more on top, including the full accident contribution.

Every payslip in Poland shows ZUS - the social insurance contributions that come off your gross salary before you see a zloty, plus a second set your employer pays on top. The rates are fixed in the Social Insurance System Act (consolidated text: Journal of Laws 2026, item 199) and do not change for 2026. As of October 14, 2026, this is exactly who pays what.
The five insurances on a payslip
An employment contract (umowa o prace) carries four social insurances plus health insurance:
Social insurance (Article 22(1) of the Act):
- Pension (emerytalne): 19.52% of gross salary - split evenly, 9.76% from you and 9.76% from your employer (Article 16(1)),
- Disability (rentowe): 8.00% - 1.5% from you, 6.5% from your employer (Article 16(1b)),
- Sickness (chorobowe): 2.45% - paid entirely by you (Article 16(2)),
- Accident (wypadkowe): 0.40% to 8.12% - paid entirely by your employer (Article 16(3)); the exact rate depends on the employer's risk category.
Health insurance (zdrowotna): 9% of the assessment base (Article 79(1) of the benefits act, consolidated text: Journal of Laws 2025, item 1461). The base is your gross salary minus the social contributions you paid.
What it costs you - an example
On a gross salary of 8,000 zl under an employment contract:
- Your social contributions: 13.71% (9.76 + 1.5 + 2.45) = 1,096.80 zl off your gross,
- Health insurance: 9% of 6,903.20 zl = 621.29 zl,
- Your employer additionally pays roughly 17.9% on top of your gross (9.76 + 6.5 + a typical accident rate around 1.67%), or about 1,434 zl - money that never appears on your payslip but is part of the real cost of employing you.
Your take-home is the remainder after health insurance and the income tax advance. The employer's share is invisible to you but matters when negotiating: a contractor comparing B2B rates to an employment salary should remember the employer's ~18-20% on-cost. See our guide to employment contract vs zlecenie vs B2B.
Who is covered and what the contributions buy
The contributions are not a tax in disguise - each one maps to a specific benefit:
- Pension builds your old-age pension account with ZUS.
- Disability covers disability pensions (renta) if you lose the ability to work.
- Sickness is what pays your sick leave: 80% of salary from the 34th day of incapacity, via ZUS (the employer pays the first 33 days directly).
- Accident covers work accidents and occupational diseases.
- Health is your ticket to the NFZ public health system - see our guide to using the NFZ as a foreigner.
For employees, all of this is mandatory. On a zlecenie contract the social insurances apply too, but sickness insurance is voluntary; on B2B you pay your own contributions as a business, with different (often flat) bases - covered in our contract types guide.

One more detail expats notice on their first payslip: the contributions are calculated on your gross salary, including most bonuses and allowances, and they are deducted before income tax. That is why the jump from gross to net in Poland feels steep - between social insurance, health insurance and the tax advance, a middle earner keeps roughly 70-73% of gross. The split still compares well with most of western Europe, and the sickness, maternity and pension rights it buys are full-size.
Minimum-wage context
Contribution bases track actual salary, so the minimum wage sets the floor for full-time employment. From January 1, 2026 the minimum is 4,806 zl gross per month - details in our minimum wage 2026 guide. ZUS's 2026 contribution notice confirms the percentage rates are unchanged.
Frequently asked questions
### How much does ZUS take from my salary in Poland?
From your gross salary, 13.71% goes to social insurance (pension 9.76%, disability 1.5%, sickness 2.45%) and 9% of the reduced base goes to health insurance. Your employer pays a further roughly 18-20% on top, depending on the accident rate.
Are ZUS contribution rates changing in 2026?
No. The percentage rates are fixed by Article 22(1) of the Social Insurance System Act: 19.52% pension, 8% disability, 2.45% sickness, and 0.40-8.12% accident. Health insurance stays at 9% under Article 79(1) of the benefits act.
Does my employer pay ZUS on top of my salary?
Yes. The employer pays 9.76% pension, 6.5% disability and the whole accident contribution (0.40-8.12%) on top of your gross - around 18-20% extra that does not appear on your payslip. When you negotiate pay in Poland, always negotiate the gross figure; the employer's ZUS share comes on top of that number and is not taken out of it.
Do I pay ZUS on a zlecenie contract?
Yes, zlecenie contracts carry pension, disability and accident insurance, but sickness insurance is voluntary. Health insurance at 9% applies as well. The exact split differs from an employment contract. * Photo: Marek Sliwecki, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons.
