Allegro vs OLX in Poland: Where to Buy New and Used
The essentials: Allegro for new products: professional sellers, warranties, Smart delivery, buyer protection up to 20,000 zł. OLX for used furniture, bikes, cars and departure sales - bargain, and use OLX Delivery with Payments for protection. Golden rule: never move payment off-platform; that is where every scam starts.

Two marketplaces, two instincts
New arrivals in Poland quickly discover that online shopping here runs on two platforms that barely exist elsewhere: Allegro, the marketplace for new goods from professional sellers, and OLX, the classifieds giant for second-hand everything. They look similar in an app store and solve different problems. Understanding which to open first - and how each protects you - saves real money in the first months of setting up a Polish home.
The short version: for new products with receipts, warranties and delivery to a parcel locker, Allegro is the default - Poland's answer to Amazon in a country where Amazon is a minor player. For used furniture, bikes, appliances, cars and flat-hunting oddities, OLX is the national habit. Most Polish households use both, weekly.
Allegro: the new-goods machine
Allegro operates as a marketplace of verified sellers - shops, brands and professional merchants - which means new items, invoices or receipts for warranty purposes, and consumer return rights on most purchases. It also maintains an English version of the site at allegro.pl/en, which removes the language barrier for browsing and checkout.
Two features define the experience. First, delivery: Allegro integrates tightly with the Paczkomat parcel-locker network, and the Allegro Smart subscription bundles free or cheap delivery and returns on eligible items - the small Smart badge on a listing is the marker to look for. Second, buyer protection: Allegro Ochrona Kupujących (Allegro Buyer Protection) covers you when a parcel does not arrive, items are missing, a seller does not refund an annulled or returned order, or goods arrive damaged or not as described and the seller's complaints process fails. Compensation under the programme can reach 20,000 zł, assessed case by case. The limits matter too: the protection does not apply to purchases concluded outside the platform, to cash paid on personal pickup, or to buyers with unpaid debts on the account - which is why experienced users keep every transaction inside Allegro's own payment flow.
Returns deserve one more sentence, because they are where the two platforms diverge most. Buying from a professional seller on Allegro is a distance contract under EU consumer rules, which means a 14-day right to withdraw without giving a reason on most new items - send it back and the price follows. OLX's private sellers are not businesses, so no such right exists: once you pay a private lister, the deal is final unless the Protection Package applies. That asymmetry, more than price, is why expensive and failure-prone purchases belong on Allegro. OLX: the classifieds reflex
OLX is where Poland sells what it no longer needs - and where a furnished flat's gaps get filled for a fraction of new prices. The model is person-to-person listings, strongest in exactly the categories expats need in month one: furniture, white goods, bicycles, kids' equipment, plus cars and rooms. Bargaining is normal and expected; a polite offer ten to fifteen percent below asking is standard practice, not an insult.
OLX has professionalised its safety net around Przesyłka OLX (OLX Delivery) and Płatności OLX (OLX Payments). Transactions that use both are covered by the paid Pakiet Ochronny (Protection Package): if the parcel arrives empty or the item does not match the listing - wrong size, undisclosed damage, incomplete set, "new" goods with visible wear - the buyer returns the item to the seller and receives back the price, the delivery cost and the protection fee. The exclusions are equally explicit: deals closed without OLX Delivery and OLX Payments are not covered, nor are transactions already compensated elsewhere or resolved.

Two OLX categories deserve special caution. Rooms and flats attract deposit scams - never pay before seeing the interior and confirming the lister can actually rent it out; the market is fast, but no genuine landlord needs money before a viewing. Cars reward the opposite patience: OLX is where the whole country sells vehicles, so check the VIN in the free government historiapojazdu.gov.pl database, and budget for an independent inspection before money moves.
Delivery culture: the locker is the address
One piece of national infrastructure underpins both platforms: the Paczkomat, InPost's parcel lockers, which sit on seemingly every second street corner, outside petrol stations and supermarkets, open around the clock. Most Allegro and OLX Delivery orders end in one: you receive a code by app or SMS, walk up at any hour, and the door clicks open. For people working office hours the system quietly beats home delivery, and it is the reason "I'll send it to your locker" is a complete sentence in Polish e-commerce. Returns run the same route in reverse - generate a code in the platform's app, drop the parcel, done. The practical setup for a newcomer: install the InPost app alongside Allegro and OLX, and learn your two nearest locker locations by name.
The golden rule: stay inside the platform
Both protections share one condition, and it is the single most important habit for a newcomer: keep the payment inside the platform. The classic Polish marketplace scam is the friendly seller who suggests moving to a direct bank transfer, a BLIK code "to reserve the item", or a link that imitates a payment page. The moment money leaves Allegro's or OLX's rails, the protection packages above stop applying. Practical corollaries:
- On OLX, prefer listings offering Przesyłka OLX; for high-value items, insist on it or meet in person and inspect before paying.
- On Allegro, buy through the normal checkout, never via a seller-sent link, and check the seller's rating history - a long record of completed sales is worth more than a badge.
- For personal pickups, bring a friend, meet in daylight in a public place, and treat "pay a deposit now, collect later" as a refusal.
- On both platforms, prices far below market for phones, consoles and flats are bait, not luck.
The other side: selling when you leave
Both platforms matter twice in an expat life - once on arrival, once on departure. OLX is where departing foreigners liquidate a household fast: price furniture to move, photograph it honestly, and Warsaw's appetite does the rest; bulky items with "odbiór osobisty" (personal pickup only) still sell if priced right. Allegro's consumer wing, Allegro Lokalnie, covers local sales under the same buyer-protection umbrella. The etiquette that speeds everything: reply quickly, keep listings in Polish (a browser translator writes them for you), state defects plainly - Polish buyers reward honesty with less haggling, not more - and mark items reserved only after a concrete pickup time is agreed. Plan the final week around this: what does not sell by the day before departure goes to a charity collection point or a neighbourhood giveaway group, not the stairwell.
Which one, when: a newcomer's decision table in words
Choose Allegro when the item is something you would want a warranty or return right on: electronics, appliances, baby gear, cosmetics, books, tools. Filter for Smart for cheap locker delivery, compare seller ratings, and treat the invoice as your warranty document. Choose OLX when the item loses value slowly and inspection matters more than paperwork: solid-wood furniture, bikes, sports equipment, kids' clothes bundles, garden tools, and the endless category of "someone is leaving Warsaw and selling everything". For cars and rooms, OLX is the market - with the corresponding need for in-person verification and documents.
Many expats land on a hybrid rhythm that mirrors Polish households: Allegro for anything with a plug or an expiry date, OLX for anything with a previous life. Learn both apps in week one and the material side of settling in gets measurably cheaper.

Frequently asked questions

Are purchases on Allegro and OLX protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, if you stay inside each platform's own payment and delivery system. Allegro Buyer Protection covers non-delivery, missing or not-as-described items and missing refunds, with compensation up to 20,000 zł. OLX's paid Protection Package covers empty parcels and items not matching the listing when you use OLX Delivery and OLX Payments.
Can I use Allegro in English?
Yes - Allegro maintains an English version of its site at allegro.pl/en. Product descriptions from sellers are mostly in Polish, but browser translation handles them well.
Can I sell my things on OLX when I leave Poland?
Yes - OLX is the standard route for departing expats to sell furniture and appliances quickly. Write the listing in Polish, price to move, state defects honestly, and prefer personal pickup for bulky items.
