One of the underrated perks of living in Warsaw is the weekend trip: leave work on Friday, land in another European capital before dinner, and be back at your desk on Monday. With two airports and a network that keeps growing - 142 destinations from Chopin Airport in the summer 2026 season, and a record Ryanair expansion kicking in with the winter 2026/2027 schedule from 25 October - the choice of direct city-break routes is wider than ever. Here are the best direct weekend destinations from Warsaw right now, and how to choose between them.

How the network looks in late 2026

Warsaw Chopin Airport offered 142 destinations in the summer 2026 season, the largest network in its history, according to operator PPL. New for the season were LOT routes to Bologna, San Francisco, Porto, Heraklion, Palma de Mallorca and Almaty, eight new Wizz Air routes including Tallinn, Sofia, Faro and Zadar, and the return of airBaltic with a year-round link to Riga flying three times a week.

The winter season starting 25 October 2026 brings Ryanair's biggest-ever Warsaw schedule: 46 routes across the city's two airports, 18 of them new. From Modlin, the carrier adds Birmingham, Bratislava, Bristol, Budapest, Copenhagen, Edinburgh, Manchester, Palma, Shannon, Stockholm and Zagreb, growing to 30 winter routes with nine based aircraft; frequencies to Dublin, Madrid and Malta also rise. From Chopin, Ryanair launches seven new routes - Bari, Bologna, Catania, Liverpool, Naples, Turin and Venice - for a total of 16. In short: the winter of 2026/2027 is an unusually good time to be a Warsaw-based weekend traveller, especially if you like Italy.

Italy: the strongest weekend market this winter

No country is better connected from Warsaw this winter than Italy. Ryanair's new Chopin routes add Bari, Bologna, Catania, Naples, Turin and Venice to a market already served by LOT (which added Bologna, flying six times a week, in the summer 2026 schedule) and by long-standing services to Rome and Milan from both airports. A Friday-evening flight puts you in Naples or Venice in around two hours; Sunday returns get you home before midnight. Bologna and Turin are the connoisseur's picks - outstanding food cities that see a fraction of Rome's crowds - while Catania is the play for winter sun, with Etna as a bonus.

The British Isles: new and expanded links

The UK and Ireland gained the most from Ryanair's Modlin expansion: new winter routes to Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Manchester and Shannon, plus more flights to Dublin, and a new Liverpool link from Chopin. London remains the classic Warsaw weekend - served from both airports with multiple daily flights across several airlines - and Edinburgh is the pick of the new additions: compact, walkable, and spectacular in the colder months. Flight times to the UK run around two and a half hours, so even a two-night trip feels unhurried.

Scandinavia and the Baltics: short hops north

New for winter 2026/2027 from Modlin are Copenhagen and Stockholm - both two-night-friendly cities under two hours away. They join airBaltic's year-round Riga service from Chopin (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, launched 30 March 2026) and Wizz Air's Tallinn route, added in the summer 2026 schedule with daily flights. For a cheaper, closer alternative, remember that Vilnius is reachable by direct train in about seven and a half hours - no airport needed at all.

Central Europe: capitals within easy reach

Ryanair's new Modlin routes to Budapest, Bratislava and Zagreb round out a central-European set that already includes Prague and Vienna on LOT from Chopin. All are roughly an hour to ninety minutes in the air, making them the easiest weekend wins on the map: minimal travel time, no jet lag, and prices that reward booking a few weeks out. Budapest in particular works year-round - thermal baths are a cold-weather attraction, not a summer one.

Winter sun: where to escape the grey

When Warsaw's November sets in, the weekend flight math favours the south. Palma de Mallorca is served by both LOT (three times a week from summer 2026) and Ryanair's new winter route from Modlin. Malaga, Alicante and Malta are long-standing low-cost staples from both airports, with Malta also gaining frequency this winter, and Wizz Air's Faro route (from the summer 2026 schedule) puts the Algarve in play. A Friday-to-Sunday dash will not replace a proper holiday, but two days of 18-degree sunshine in January is real medicine.

Chopin or Modlin? Choosing the right departure

The same airline may fly your route from either airport, and some cities - Palma, Bologna - are now served from both. Chopin wins on convenience: about 30 minutes from the centre by city train or bus on a normal ZTM ticket. Modlin wins on price more often, but adds a 40-60 minute transfer by ModlinBus or train-plus-shuttle. For a two-night trip, a saving of 100-200 zł per person can be worth the extra hour - but not at 5 a.m., when the only sane Modlin plan is a taxi or an airport hotel. Check the airport code (WAW vs WMI) before you pay; our Chopin vs Modlin comparison has the full breakdown.

Weekend-trip tactics

A few habits make short trips much cheaper and calmer. Fly hand-luggage-only: on a two-night trip a cabin bag is enough, and you skip both the bag fee and the carousel. Book roughly three to eight weeks out for the best fares on low-cost routes, and compare both Warsaw airports plus the airline's own site before buying. Aim for the first flight out on Saturday or the last on Friday evening, and the latest feasible return on Sunday - on short trips, flight timing matters more than a few złoty of fare difference. Finally, remember that schedules are seasonal: routes listed here reflect the winter 2026/2027 timetable that starts on 25 October 2026, and frequencies can change between seasons.

Don't forget the train

For a couple of destinations, the rail alternative is genuinely competitive once you count airport transfers and check-in. PKP Intercity runs four direct trains a day from Warsaw to Berlin, with journey times from 6 hours 37 minutes and promotional second-class fares from 24.90 EUR when booked early - centre to centre, no security line. The Vilnius train, mentioned above, is the other strong rail weekend from Warsaw, and PKP Intercity's planner lists further direct international services. For most cities on this list the plane wins on time, but if you hate airports, Berlin by rail with a book and a dining-car coffee is a fine way to start a weekend.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best weekend flight destinations from Warsaw?

For winter 2026/2027 the strongest picks are Italy (Venice, Naples, Bologna, Bari, Catania, Turin), the UK (London, Edinburgh, Manchester), Scandinavia (Copenhagen, Stockholm), central Europe (Budapest, Prague, Vienna) and winter-sun spots such as Palma, Malta and the Algarve.

Which new direct routes start from Warsaw in winter 2026/2027?
