Emergency corridor in Poland: how to form the korytarz życia
Short answer: In heavy traffic on roads with 2+ lanes per direction, the far left lane moves left and all others right. Using the corridor yourself costs 500-2,500 zl.

On a Polish motorway or expressway, an ambulance with blue lights and sirens can come up behind a queue at any moment. The law says what every driver must do, and it is not just a courtesy. This guide follows the text of article 9 of the Road Traffic Act as quoted by the State Fire Service (KGPSP) on gov.pl, the Ministry of Infrastructure, Police news of 23 July 2025 and Police news of 29 June 2021, as checked on 17 October 2026.
What the law says
Article 9 of the Road Traffic Act, as quoted by the State Fire Service, sets two levels of duty:
- Every road user and any other person on the road must make it easier for an emergency (privileged) vehicle to pass, in particular by getting out of its way at once and, if needed, stopping.
- In heavy traffic that obstructs the free passage of an emergency vehicle, drivers must form a corridor, the "corridor of life" (korytarz życia).
How to form the corridor
According to the State Fire Service and the Police:
- On a carriageway with two lanes in the same direction, drivers in the left lane move as close as possible to the left edge of their lane. Drivers in the right lane move as close as possible to the right edge of their lane.
- On a carriageway with more than two lanes in the same direction, drivers in the far left lane move to the left. Drivers in all the other lanes move to the right.
- After the emergency vehicle has passed, you may continue in the lane you were in, according to the Police.
The Ministry of Infrastructure says the rules were designed to give a clear direction for the lane change, so that the space is created in the same way everywhere. The Police stress that you should not wait until you hear sirens: on a motorway or expressway, create the corridor as soon as you see a queue forming or a blockage.

Which vehicles
The 2021 Police news says all drivers must allow free passage to rescue service vehicles, and also to vehicles of road managers or breakdown trucks if they take part in a rescue operation. The State Fire Service page gives examples of fire engines, ambulances and Police cars, when they use lights and sirens.
You must not use the corridor yourself
Article 9 also bans drivers of ordinary vehicles from using the path that has been created for the emergency vehicle. Police news of 23 July 2025 describes a case in which a 42-year-old driver reversed along the corridor on an expressway on 22 June 2025. Police gave her a 800 zloty ticket and assigned 18 penalty points. The Police say using the corridor to skip a queue is dangerous, because it puts the driver, other road users and accident victims at risk.
Fines and points
According to the Police and the State Fire Service, the penalty for violating the ban on using the corridor is a fine of 500 to 2,500 zloty. The 2025 Police news says 8 penalty points; a 2021 Police item said a ticket of 500 zloty and 6 points, so the sources differ and you should confirm the current figure. The State Fire Service adds that in some circumstances, where the behaviour endangers road safety, the driving licence can be taken. The national road safety council (KRBRD) booklet also lists the 500 to 2,500 zloty range.
The sources are not fully consistent on how the law was introduced. The Ministry of Infrastructure says the president signed the amendment on 5 November 2019 and it started 21 days after publication, while one State Fire Service page mentions a different date for the amending act. Rely on the current text of article 9 if the date matters to you.
Zipper merge
The same 2019 amendment, according to the Ministry of Infrastructure, also introduced rules for merging in turn (jazda na suwak) where a lane is closed. We did not read the exact wording of that rule for this guide.
Tips for expat drivers
- Check your mirrors for blue lights on busy multi-lane roads.
- Move to the correct side early and keep the gap open even if the queue is stopped.
- Do not follow the ambulance through the gap.
