Łódź City Library Card: A Foreign Reader's Guide
The essentials: Łódź municipal library lists passports, Karta Polaka and temporary or permanent residence cards for foreign readers. Books run up to 30 days, games and vinyl up to 14; one conditional renewal opens ten days before the due date.

Joining Biblioteka Miejska w Łodzi is a useful practical step if you want books, spoken books or an occasional board game without buying everything yourself. For a foreign reader, the starting point is the library's own registration clause, not an assumption that you must already hold a Polish identity card.
The current document index links the regulations attached to the director's order of 16 December 2025. They describe a specific registration route for foreigners, different loan periods for books and games, and a renewal window that opens ten days before the due date. Those details make a first visit easier to organise.
Make sure this is the right library network
This guide covers Biblioteka Miejska w Łodzi, the municipal library network, rather than every library in Łódź. University collections and other institutions may have separate rules. Begin with the municipal library's website and branch information so you do not plan around a card belonging to a different institution.
Choose a first branch you can revisit. Look at the current branch details and ask about the title or format you want. Registering in a system does not mean every branch stocks the same materials. A catalogue result needs a location and availability check before it becomes a sensible journey.
Foreign readers have a listed document route
The general registration paragraph refers to a valid photo document with PESEL. A separate clause then says foreigners are registered on the basis of a passport document, Karta Polaka, permanent residence card or temporary residence card. Read that specific provision alongside the general paragraph.
Do not tell yourself a passport is automatically insufficient because the earlier sentence mentions PESEL. Bring an accepted original document and ask staff to apply the foreign-reader route. If your particular document falls outside the listed categories, clarify it with the library before making an important visit depend on same-day registration.
Expect a form and a personal commitment
A reader must read the regulations, show the relevant document, complete the registration card and sign a commitment to follow the rules. This is not only a request for a piece of plastic. It establishes who is responsible for the materials borrowed on the account.
Ask about any form field you do not understand rather than guessing. If your name or place of residence changes later, the rules require you to notify the library. Having correct details is part of maintaining the account, even if you use online services more often than the desk.
Your first library card is free
The regulations say the first Łódzka Karta Biblioteczna is issued free of charge. The card is also called Fiszka and carries a QR code and individual identification number. It is the identifier you present when using the library's services under the rules.
A replacement after loss or damage carries a 2 zł charge in the current document. Keep the card secure and ask the library promptly if it goes missing. A friend borrowing your card does not make the account's responsibilities disappear. The rules restrict use to the owner or an authorised person.
A resident card needs the library service activated
Karta Łodzianina can be used as a library card, but the regulations attach conditions: an active resident package and the user's own activation of the library service in the card account panel. Possessing a resident card is not, by itself, proof that library use is already active.
The rules recognise the physical resident card and its mobile application version. Check the service status before relying on it for a visit. If you are unsure, show staff the actual account status and ask what remains to be done rather than assuming a city benefits programme enrolled you in every participating service automatically.
Update details in the new calendar year
At the first visit in a new calendar year, readers must update their personal details in the selected branch's computer database. That is a distinct administrative step from extending a borrowed book. A loan renewal changes a deadline; an account update keeps the reader record current.
Put a note in your routine if you visit only occasionally. If a staff member asks to confirm details after New Year, it is not necessarily a fresh membership application or a charge. It may be the annual update required by the regulations. Changes during the year should also be reported when they happen.
Know the branch and system limits
From one branch, a reader can have up to five books, one vinyl record and one board game on loan under the current terms. When using several branches, the total across the account cannot exceed fifteen materials. Those are related limits, not a promise of fifteen items from each location.
Start with fewer items if you are still learning the system. The library separately points readers to board-game rules, so ask about components and condition when choosing a game. Checking what is present before leaving is much easier than debating a missing piece at the return desk.

Books, games and vinyl have different periods
Books, including spoken books, are lent for up to thirty days. Board games and vinyl records have a period of up to fourteen days. Because the regulations use maximum periods, record the actual due date shown for each item instead of calculating a date from memory.
Borrowing several formats on the same afternoon can therefore create more than one deadline. A game is not automatically due when the book is due. Before travelling, check every item on the account and plan returns around the shortest outstanding period rather than treating the whole checkout as one package.
Renewal opens ten days before the deadline
A reader can obtain one extension: up to thirty days for books and up to fourteen days for games and vinyl. It is conditional on the material not being ordered by another user. The renewal window begins ten days before the return deadline and ends on the due date.
This is not a promise that every loan can be kept for twice its original period. Check whether an extension is permitted and verify the resulting date. A blocked renewal is a signal to arrange the return, not to wait and see whether a reminder arrives.
Orders need a pickup plan
The regulations allow up to five book orders, made in person, by telephone, email or the online account. Ordered materials must be collected within three working days; otherwise they are made available to another reader. The library also reserves the ability to block accounts temporarily for uncollected orders.
Make the request when you can actually collect it. Read the response and check the pickup place. Sending an order is not evidence that the book is ready, and a working-day window should not be replaced with a guessed weekend deadline. Ask for clarification when the notice leaves you uncertain.
Inspect condition before borrowing
The rules expressly tell readers to check the materials' condition before taking them. Report visible damage and missing parts to the librarian. If damage is first recorded later and was not reported beforehand, responsibility can fall on the reader.
You do not need to perform a conservation assessment. Look for obvious loose pages, writing, a damaged disc or missing game components and ask staff to note the issue. That short check is more useful than discovering a problem at home and hoping the library already knew about it.
Overdue charges are per item, per day
The current regulations set the overdue charge at 0.50 zł for each material for every day overdue. Late return can block use of services, and unpaid overdue charges also block use. Postage for sent reminders is a separate possible charge under the document.
Readers are required to return materials on time without waiting for a demand from the library. Treat electronic messages as helpful information, not permission to ignore the recorded date until one arrives. If a problem prevents return or renewal, contact the library while there is still time to understand your options.
Ask before replacing a lost item
For loss or destruction, the regulations require buying an identical copy, or paying compensation based on current market value when that is not possible. Another edition can be accepted with the branch manager's consent. A multi-part set has additional consequences because losing one part can mean compensation for the whole set.
Speak to the branch before spending money on a substitute. Similar title, different edition or an incomplete replacement may not meet the procedure. Keep the library's receipt for compensation. Reporting a loss promptly lets you establish the accepted remedy rather than creating another problem with an unsuitable purchase.
On-site use is not take-home borrowing
Current periodicals are made available on site. The regulations also describe the procedure for using collections in the library and returning those materials to staff before leaving. An item being accessible in the room does not establish that it can be checked out for thirty days.
Computer equipment and wireless internet have their own rules in the same document. Ask what is available at the branch and what sign-in procedure applies. Do not infer a guaranteed desk, device or unrestricted service from membership alone; the practical offer depends on the actual facility and conditions.
Register children with the responsible adult
For readers under eighteen, a parent or legal guardian signs and is responsible. Once the young reader reaches eighteen, the rules require completing and signing a registration card personally. This is worth remembering when a family account routine continues through a child's eighteenth birthday.
Before leaving the first visit, know which items belong to which account, how to inspect dates and how to contact the branch. Our Warsaw and Kraków guides can help compare other cities, but Łódź has its own procedure. Use the specific foreign-reader clause, active card and ten-day renewal window rather than importing another library's routine.
