Away from Poland? How Poczta Polska Mail Storage Works

The essentials: Poczta Polska can store eligible notified mail for up to 14 days after the normal collection deadline. Online request submission is free, but daily storage charges apply. It is not an extension for court or official correspondence sent under special procedures.

A trip away can turn a small postal notice into a problem: the letter is waiting in Poland, but you will not be back before its collection deadline. Poczta Polska has a service called przechowywanie, which can keep eligible items at the post office for longer. It is useful, but it is not a universal holiday pause for your mail. In particular, it does not extend the rules for court, administrative or tax correspondence sent under special procedures.

The practical starting point is the item's service and collection deadline, not simply how long you will be away. Identify what is waiting, check whether storage applies, and arrange it before relying on the extra time. This guide covers ordinary postal storage, with information checked on 4 November 2026.

What the storage service actually changes

Poczta Polska describes storage as keeping eligible notified items at its facility for up to 14 additional days, counting from the day after the normal collection deadline. The operator's explanation says this can mean as much as four weeks after the first delivery attempt. That is a maximum description, not a fresh four-week countdown whenever you open the form.

Under the universal-service regulations checked for this guide, an uncollected registered item is normally returned after 14 days counted from the day after the first notice. Storage adds a separate period after the collection deadline for items covered by an accepted request. Read the dates on the actual notice, and ask the office to confirm the final collection date. Do not calculate a new deadline from the day you found the paper in your mailbox.

There is also a capacity condition. The regulations allow the post office to refuse storage when it cannot provide it. Submitting a request is therefore something to verify, rather than proof that every item will stay put. If an item is already close to return, contact the collection office promptly instead of assuming that an online submission has rescued it.

Which items can be stored?

The operator lists notified unregistered letters, such as ordinary letters too large for the mailbox, and registered items, such as registered letters and eligible postal parcels. The paper request lets the addressee select registered items, postal money orders, and notified unregistered letters whose size or shape prevents delivery through the mailbox.

This is not a promise to empty your mailbox into a secure holiday bundle. A normal letter that fits in the box is different from an oversized letter that has been notified for collection. If your goal is to stop the box filling up, ask about the appropriate arrangement rather than assuming this service covers everything arriving at your address.

Postal money orders have a separate limit. The current online form and paper request state a maximum storage period of seven days after the normal collection deadline, rather than the 14-day limit for eligible postal items. Do not use the letter-storage rule for a money order. Confirm its precise deadline and applicable charge with the office.

The exclusions matter more than the holiday dates

Both the request form and the operator's service explanation exclude correspondence sent under special procedural rules. The form names criminal, civil, administrative, administrative-court and tax proceedings, as well as proceedings concerning breaches of public-finance discipline. In ordinary terms, a letter connected with a court or authority needs a separate procedural check, not the assumption that paid postal storage extends it.

The service also excludes Pocztex. The operator's webpage and online form additionally list older parcel products, including PACZKI24 and PACZKI48; the online form also names Paczka+. Parcels containing bees, domestic-fowl chicks or milk samples are excluded too. The newer paper form uses a shorter product list. That difference is a reason to identify the precise service at the counter, not a reason to treat an omitted older name as newly eligible.

UKE's delivery guide explains why official mail deserves care: administrative correspondence can have legal delivery effects after the prescribed notification period even when it has not been physically collected. The exact rules depend on the proceeding. Storage does not replace telling an authority about an address change, arranging proper representation, or getting advice about a deadline. See our court-letter guide for the separate issues.

How to request storage online or on paper

Start from Poczta Polska's own storage page and its linked electronic form. The operator says identity is authenticated through a trusted profile or personally at a post office. Do not confuse filling fields with completing every verification step. Keep the acknowledgement and check what, if anything, remains to be done before the request is accepted.

The paper form can be obtained at a post office or downloaded from the operator's website. Poczta Polska says a completed printed request can be submitted personally at a post office or handed to the postman. The form combines two different requests, forwarding and storage, so select the storage section deliberately. It asks for the categories covered and an end date.

The request takes effect from the day after it is accepted, according to the online form and printed request. That timing is another reason not to leave it until the final collection day. Ask the office to confirm the acceptance date, the requested period, the items covered and the latest collection date for anything already waiting. Keep the completed copy or acknowledgement with the notice.

Useful wording at the counter is: Chcę złożyć żądanie przechowywania przesyłek po terminie odbioru - "I want to submit a request to store postal items after the collection deadline." Then show the notice and ask whether this particular item is eligible. The sentence describes the service; it does not remove the identity checks or exclusions.

What it costs in November 2026

There are two different charges to understand. Submitting the request through the electronic form has no submission fee. Submitting it at a post office carries a one-time 6 zł fee, according to the operator's current service page and additional-fees tariff. Free online submission does not mean the storage itself is free.

The storage charge depends on the item and the period, and is collected when the stored item is picked up. Poczta Polska's webpage gives examples of 0.50 zł per day for domestic letters and 2 zł per day for parcels. The tariff has separate categories, including declared-value letters. Do not apply the cheapest example to every shipment or treat a household's several items as one charge.

For an ordinary domestic letter in the 0.50 zł category, ten chargeable storage days would mean 5 zł in storage charges. That is an illustration of the daily rate, not a quote for your item: confirm the classification and number of chargeable days at collection. If using the counter route, the request-submission fee is separate. Prices may change after this guide's check date, so recheck the operator's tariff before ordering.

Storage is different from forwarding or authorising collection

Storage keeps eligible mail at the postal facility for later collection. Forwarding, or dosyłanie, is a different request to send eligible mail to another address. The shared paper form has separate sections for the two. Choosing storage does not tell the post office to deliver the item to your temporary accommodation, and choosing forwarding does not automatically extend every collection deadline.

If another person will collect instead, postal authority is another separate question. Do not hand over the notice and assume it gives that person the right to collect every kind of letter. Identity, household-delivery rules, authority and special-procedure restrictions need checking for the item. Our postal power-of-attorney guide covers setting up collection authority without confusing it with representation in a legal case.

A short plan before leaving Poland

  1. Check the mailbox and any existing notices. Photograph the item number, office address and collection deadline.
  2. Identify the operator and product. A Pocztex parcel or special-procedure letter is not covered just because Poczta Polska is involved.
  3. Choose storage only if its scope and maximum period fit your return. Use the official form and finish the required identity step.
  4. Verify acceptance and the final collection date. Ask about capacity and charges, especially for an item already waiting.
  5. Keep a separate plan for court, tax and administrative correspondence. Do not treat a holiday booking as an extension of a legal deadline.

On return, use the collection office named for the item and bring identification and the notice or item details. Ask for the storage calculation if the charge is unclear. If the item has already been returned, contact the sender about the next step; do not assume a later request can reverse a completed return. The safest use of this service is a modest one: extra collection time for eligible ordinary mail, with acceptance and dates checked, rather than a blanket pause on everything sent to you.

Frequently asked questions

Does postal storage pause court-letter deadlines?

No. Letters sent under special procedural rules are excluded. Check the rules for the particular proceeding separately.

Is online postal storage free?

Submitting the electronic request is free. Storage is charged by item and period when the item is collected.

How much extra time can I get?

For eligible registered and notified unregistered postal items, the maximum is 14 days after the normal collection deadline. Acceptance and the actual final date need checking.

When does the request take effect?

The operator form says the day after acceptance. Do not assume a last-minute submission will stop a return already in progress.

Can Pocztex parcels be stored under this request?

Pocztex is excluded. Check the available options for that shipment separately.
