Polish Online Shopping 101: Allegro, Paczkomat and Returns
The essentials: Poland shops on Allegro and collects parcels from InPost Paczkomat lockers, over 28,000 nationwide. Allegro Smart costs 59.90 zł/year, with free delivery from 49.90 zł per seller. Online purchases carry a 14-day return right; faulty goods can be claimed via a statutory reklamacja complaint.

Online shopping in Poland: the essentials
Polish e-commerce runs on two institutions every expat meets in the first week: Allegro, the marketplace where Poland buys almost everything, and Paczkomat, the yellow-and-grey parcel lockers standing on every other street corner. Add a strong 14-day return right for anything bought online, and the system is genuinely convenient once you learn it. This guide covers how each piece works, with current prices and rules from official sources.
Allegro: Poland's default store
Allegro is where most online shopping in Poland happens - a marketplace mixing professional sellers, brands' official stores and private listings. You browse in Polish or switch the interface to English, pay by card, transfer or BLIK (Poland's instant mobile payment system, which you will find at every checkout), and choose delivery to a locker, a pickup point or a courier.
Key things to know as a buyer:
- Buyer protection is built in. If an item does not arrive or is not as described, Allegro's Protection Program (Ochrona Kupujących) refunds you - one reason Poles buy from unknown sellers without worry.
- Allegro Smart! is the subscription that pays for itself fast. Per Allegro's current help pages, Smart costs 59.90 zł per year or 14.99 zł per month. Since 2 March 2026, Smart gives free delivery - to lockers, pickup points and by courier - on orders of 49.90 zł or more from a single seller (the rule applies to Smart activated or renewed after 1 March 2026; older subscriptions ran on previous thresholds until expiry). A free trial with 5 free deliveries and returns within 3 months is available to new accounts.
- Allegro Lokalnie is the classifieds arm for second-hand finds from private sellers - worth knowing alongside OLX, the other big used-goods platform.

Paczkomat: the locker is the address
The single biggest difference from North American delivery culture: in Poland, most parcels never come to your door. They go to a Paczkomat - an automated InPost locker - and you collect them with a code from the app or a text message, at 7:00 or 23:00, whenever suits you.
The scale explains why it works: InPost reported in February 2026 that its network had grown past 28,000 machines in Poland (over 61,000 across nine countries, after a record 14,200 new machines installed in 2025). In Warsaw you are rarely more than a few hundred metres from one. How a typical pickup goes:
1. At checkout you pick a specific locker from the map - usually the one by your building, office or tram stop. 2. When the parcel lands, the InPost app shows a pickup code and a QR. 3. At the machine you scan the code (or open the compartment remotely from the app) - no queue, no human, no Polish needed.
Lockers also work for sending parcels and for returns: most Allegro returns can be dropped into a locker with a code generated in the app. If a locker is full at delivery time, the courier reroutes your parcel to the nearest available one - check the app before heading out.

Returns: your 14-day legal right
Polish and EU consumer law gives you a real safety net for online purchases. Per the consumer rights portal of Poland's Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK):
- You may withdraw from a distance contract - including anything bought online - within 14 days, without giving a reason.
- The clock starts when you (or a person you designated) receive the goods; if an order arrives in separate shipments, it starts with the last item.
- You then send the goods back and the seller refunds the payment, including the cheapest standard delivery cost.
There are standard exceptions - for example personalised goods, perishables, and sealed items like software or hygiene products once unsealed - so check the listing before assuming a return is possible. Note the asymmetry that surprises newcomers: this right applies to online and distance purchases. In a physical shop, returns are a matter of the store's goodwill, not law.

When something is broken: the complaint (reklamacja)
Do not confuse the 14-day return with the reklamacja - the complaint you file when a product is faulty or not as the contract promised. Per UOKiK, goods not conforming to the contract give you a statutory claim against the seller (not the manufacturer): you can demand repair or replacement first, and a price reduction or full refund if that fails. The seller cannot refuse to accept a complaint, and the seller's liability applies whether you bought online or in a shop. A manufacturer's gwarancja (warranty) exists alongside this right - it is an additional, voluntary route, never a replacement for the seller's statutory responsibility. Keep your receipt or order confirmation; it identifies the seller and anchors the claim.

Beyond Allegro and lockers
- OLX is the classifieds standard for second-hand furniture, bikes and flats - meet-seller culture, so apply usual caution and pay on pickup or through OLX's delivery option.
- Poczta Polska (the state postal service) still carries plenty of parcels and registered letters; official mail from offices often arrives this way.
- International shopping: parcels from outside the EU can attract customs and VAT handling; ordering from EU shops is friction-free in comparison. Many expats simply use Amazon.de or local Polish shops instead of shipping from home.
- Grocery delivery (Glovo, Żabka Nano and similar) fills the same-day niche in bigger cities.
- Allegro One and other networks: beyond InPost, you will meet Orlen Paczka, DPD Pickup and DHL boxes at checkout. The mechanics are identical - code in, door opens - so the skills transfer across networks.
- Courier to the door is always available for a fee and is the standard choice for furniture and appliances; delivery windows are usually texted to you the same morning.
Practical tips from week one
1. Install the InPost app on day one - it is the remote control for your deliveries and returns. 2. Choose a locker you actually pass daily; parcels wait only a limited time before being moved. 3. Pay with BLIK once your Polish bank account is open - it is the fastest checkout method everywhere. 4. Screenshot the listing when buying from a small seller; it makes any "not as described" claim easier. 5. Use the 14-day right deliberately: order two sizes, return one - this is normal, legal practice in Poland. 6. Watch for the "fulfilled by Allegro" badge - parcels handled in Allegro's own logistics tend to arrive fastest and track most reliably. 7. Set the Allegro interface to English in account settings while you learn Polish product vocabulary; listings themselves stay in Polish, so translation plugins help for details. 8. Keep packaging for a few days after a big purchase; returns and complaints are much easier with the original box.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Paczkomat and how do I use it?
A Paczkomat is an automated InPost parcel locker - over 28,000 operate in Poland. At checkout you choose a locker, then collect the parcel with a code or QR from the InPost app, at any hour. The same machines handle sending and returns.
How much does Allegro Smart cost in 2026?
59.90 zł per year or 14.99 zł per month, per Allegro's help pages. Since 2 March 2026 it includes free delivery - lockers, pickup points and courier - on orders of at least 49.90 zł from a single seller.
Can I return something I bought online in Poland?
Yes. Consumer law gives you 14 days to withdraw from an online purchase without giving a reason, counted from the day you receive the goods (the last item, for split deliveries). Exceptions include personalised items, perishables and unsealed software or hygiene products.
Is it safe to buy from unknown sellers on Allegro?
Generally yes - Allegro's buyer protection refunds you if the item does not arrive or is not as described. Still check the seller's ratings and the listing details before paying, and prefer sellers with the Smart badge and a long feedback history for anything expensive.
What is the difference between a return and a reklamacja?
A return (odstąpienie) is the no-reason-needed 14-day withdrawal for online purchases. A reklamacja is a statutory complaint for goods that are faulty or not as contracted - you claim repair, replacement, a price reduction or a refund from the seller, and it applies to shop purchases too. * Photos: "Paczkomat InPost in Warsaw" by DMCGN (CC BY 4.0) and "Paczkomat InPost, ul.
