School winter holidays in Poland: ferie 2027 dates by region
The essentials: Polish school winter holidays (ferie zimowe) in 2027 run in three staggered blocks: 18-31 January (incl. Wrocław, Katowice, Łódź), 1-14 February (incl. Warsaw, Gdańsk, Lublin) and 15-28 February (incl. Kraków, Poznań, Szczecin). Each block is two weeks, Monday to Sunday.

If you have kids in a Polish school - or you just want to know when the slopes, trains and swimming pools fill up - the dates that shape the country's winter are the ferie zimowe, the two-week school winter holidays. Unlike most countries, Poland does not take them all at once: the education ministry staggers them across three blocks and sixteen voivodeships, so for six weeks every winter, some part of Poland is always on holiday.
The official 2027 dates are already set. Here is the full picture, with what it means for family logistics and travel.
Ferie zimowe 2027: the official dates
The Ministry of National Education published the schedule in May 2025. Each block runs two full weeks, Monday to Sunday:
- 18-31 January 2027: dolnośląskie (Wrocław), łódzkie (Łódź), opolskie (Opole), podkarpackie (Rzeszów), podlaskie (Białystok), śląskie (Katowice)
- 1-14 February 2027: lubelskie (Lublin), mazowieckie (Warsaw), pomorskie (Gdańsk), świętokrzyskie (Kielce)
- 15-28 February 2027: kujawsko-pomorskie (Bydgoszcz, Toruń), lubuskie (Gorzów Wielkopolski, Zielona Góra), małopolskie (Kraków), warmińsko-mazurskie (Olsztyn), wielkopolskie (Poznań), zachodniopomorskie (Szczecin)
So Warsaw families are off in the middle block, Kraków in the last, Wrocław in the first. The ministry sets the blocks after consulting the voivodes and school superintendents, and the grouping shifts around from year to year - never assume next year matches this one.
Why the stagger?
Spreading the holidays means three million schoolchildren do not all descend on the same ski slopes, trains and waterparks in the same fortnight. In practice it also means there is no "quiet" ferie week anywhere in Poland: from mid-January to the end of February, every week is somebody's holiday. Resorts in the Tatras, Beskids and Sudetes run at full stretch for all six weeks.
One important caveat for expat families: these dates bind public schools. Private and international schools in Poland set their own calendars - many follow the local voivodeship block, but some align with British, American or IB schedules instead. Check your own school's calendar before booking anything.
How the system works
The staggered ferie are a long-standing feature of the Polish school year: rather than one national fortnight, the ministry assigns voivodeships to blocks after consulting regional authorities, and the composition of the blocks shifts between years. Dates are published well in advance - the 2026/27 school calendar and ferie terms were announced in May, months before the school year even starts - which makes Poland one of the easier countries in Europe for planning family travel ahead. The two other breaks in the school year, Christmas and Easter, are short and national; only the winter ferie are staggered this way.
What the dates mean for travel
- Changeover weekends are the pinch points. The Fridays and Sundays at each block boundary (16-17 January, 30-31 January, 13-14 February, 27-28 February 2027) are when PKP Intercity trains to Zakopane, Szklarska Poręba and Wisła sell out and motorways south clog up. Book train tickets as soon as sales open, and drive outside Friday-afternoon and Sunday-evening peaks.
- Flights follow the blocks too. Routes from Warsaw spike hardest around 1-14 February, from Kraków around 15-28 February. If you are flying from a two-airport region, comparing departure cities can pay off.
- Zakopane's own crunch comes in the last block, when małopolskie - the resort's home voivodeship - is off. During 15-28 February 2027 the Tatras are at maximum capacity; the Karkonosze (Karpacz, Szklarska Poręba) get their local wave earlier, in the dolnośląskie block from 18-31 January.
- City attractions are the opposite trade. During your own city's block, museums, cinemas and pools are full of local children. Visiting another region's cities during *their* holiday week is the crowded option; going when that region is in school is quieter.
Filling the two weeks: ideas that work in Poland
If you are staying home, the classics deliver. Every mid-size Polish city floods an ice rink or two for the winter, and sledding hills - from Kraków's Błonia edges to Warsaw's Górka Szczęśliwicka - fill the moment snow lands. Thermal baths are the other winter institution: the Tatra foothill complexes around Zakopane (Bukowina Tatrzańska, Białka Tatrzańska, Chochołów) are purpose-built for ferie crowds, though they are far more pleasant midweek - our thermal baths guide compares the main ones. Indoors, the reliable circuit is science centres, trampoline parks, climbing walls, bowling and the warm pools of city aquaparks; all of them run extra holiday sessions and all of them book out.
A word on weather realism: ferie fall in the least predictable part of the Polish winter. Lowland snow can be a metre deep or entirely absent in the same calendar week, so keep a two-track plan - one snow day, one museum day - rather than betting the holiday on sledding.
If you are staying in town: the childcare question
Two weeks of no school in the coldest part of the year is a real logistics problem for working parents, and Polish cities have evolved a standard toolkit:
- Półkolonie - day camps run by city halls, cultural centres, sports clubs and private operators, typically 8:00-16:00 with lunch. City-run ones are cheap but sell out within days of registration opening (usually early December); private ones cost more and last longer.
- "Ferie w mieście" programs. Most city councils publish a dedicated page of free or subsidised workshops, skating sessions and museum classes for the holiday weeks - search your city's name plus "ferie w mieście 2027" from late December.
- Museums and science centres lay on special holiday programming; Copernicus Science Centre in Warsaw and its counterparts in other cities are classic ferie destinations, which is exactly why you should book timed tickets ahead.
- Zimowiska - the residential winter camps - are the sleep-away equivalent, usually a week or two in the mountains with activities. Schools and parishes often advertise them in November and December.
The booking timeline that saves money
Working backwards from your block: półkolonie registrations typically open in early December and the good ones fill in days. Ski accommodation for February blocks should be booked by late November for any sensible price. PKP Intercity releases tickets around 30-60 days ahead, and the ferie Friday and Sunday trains sell out fast. Flights for the February blocks are cheapest when booked in October-November; by the Christmas break, prices on the obvious sun routes have already climbed.
The rest of the 2026/27 school calendar
For planning, the other fixed points of the school year, from the ministry's calendar:
- Christmas break: 23-31 December 2026 (all schools, nationwide)
- Spring (Easter) break: 25-30 March 2027
- End of classes: 25 June 2027; summer holidays 26 June - 31 August 2027
Add the public holidays in between and you can sketch the whole family year. Our Christmas and New Year leave-planning guide covers the workplace side of the December break.

Frequently asked questions
When are the 2027 winter holidays in Warsaw and Kraków?
Warsaw (mazowieckie voivodeship): 1-14 February 2027. Kraków (małopolskie): 15-28 February 2027. Each block is two full weeks, Monday to Sunday.
Do private and international schools follow these dates?
Not necessarily. The ministry's blocks are mandatory for public schools; private and international schools set their own calendars. Many match the local voivodeship, but always confirm with your school before booking travel.
Are shops and offices closed during ferie?
No. Ferie are school holidays, not public holidays - shops, offices and services run normally. What changes is demand: family attractions, resorts and long-distance trains get much busier, and more colleagues take leave.
When is the best week to ski in Poland in 2027?
There is no empty week - some region is on holiday from 18 January to 28 February 2027. For relatively thinner crowds, ski in early January before the first block, or midweek rather than on the changeover weekends. Zakopane is busiest 15-28 February, when the local małopolskie region is off.
Do universities follow the ferie dates?
No - the staggered ferie apply to primary and secondary schools only. Universities set their own academic calendars, and most Polish students have a break between semesters around late January and February, but the exact weeks vary by university.
How far ahead are Polish school holiday dates published?
Months ahead. The Ministry of National Education announces the school-year calendar and the voivodeship ferie blocks in the spring before the school year begins - the 2026/27 dates were published in May 2025 - so families can plan nearly a year in advance.
When does the Polish school year end in 2027?
Classes end on 25 June 2027, and the summer holidays run from 26 June to 31 August 2027, per the ministry's school-year calendar.
