Silesia's main Christmas market returns to Katowice's Rynek this winter, and for the 2026 edition it is bigger than before: the fair is spilling beyond the main square onto nearby Plac Obrońców Katowic for the first time, and the historic red-brick district of Nikiszowiec gets its own three-day market in December. For expats in the Silesian conurbation - or anyone who fancies an alternative to the crowded Kraków market an hour away - here is everything confirmed for this season.

Dates and hours: 20 November 2026 to 10 January 2027

The organizer, Jarmarki Śląskie, confirms the main market on Katowice's Rynek runs from 20 November 2026 to 10 January 2027 - nearly eight weeks, covering Christmas, New Year and Epiphany.

The published opening hours:

  • Monday-Thursday: 10:00-20:00
  • Friday-Sunday: 10:00-21:00
  • Food zone: 10:00-22:00 daily, with selected stalls open until midnight
  • Holiday exceptions: 24 December 10:00-14:00; 25-26 December 10:00-21:00; 31 December 10:00-16:00 (with selected stalls open until 2:00 into New Year's Day); 1 January 12:00-20:00

Entry is free; you pay for food, drinks, gifts and attractions. Sundays are normal trading days for the market itself - note that the only trading Sundays for regular shops this season are 6, 13 and 20 December 2026.

What's on: wheels, an ice rink and a Santa parade

The 2026 market promises more than 100 trade and food stalls across the Rynek and, new this year, the adjoining Plac Obrońców Katowic. The confirmed attractions list mixes returning favourites with debuts:

  • Mega Młyn and Śląski Młyn - two Ferris wheels with views over winter Katowice
  • Ice rink - open daily 9:00-21:00; skate rental Monday-Thursday 12:00-20:00, Friday 12:00-21:00, Saturday-Sunday 10:00-21:00
  • Parada Mikołajkowa - the Santa parade through the market
  • Electric train and carousel for children
  • Stajnia Mikołaja (Santa's Stable) - new family skill game with Christmas challenges
  • Sfera Bar - a new heated dome for mulled wine and hot chocolate
  • Airstream food truck and new light figures, plus a "bear family" installation for photos
  • Interactive fairy-tale huts with characters from classic animations
  • Live music performances through the season

The food offer goes well beyond the usual oscypek: the organizer lists roasted chestnuts, zapiekanki with raclette cheese, baked sprats, Georgian cuisine and game from the Rudy Raciborskie forests, alongside organic mulled wine, mead, flavoured liqueurs and regional honeys, cheeses and sękacz cakes.

What to buy

The stall list reads like a checklist for a Polish Christmas. On the craft side, the organizer announces hand-made ornaments - glass baubles and decoupage baubles, lanterns, wooden decorations, Christmas wreaths and moss-and-cone arrangements - plus ceramics, silver jewellery, natural-stone bracelets, hand-made shawls and palm-leaf bags. Natural soy and beeswax candles, Marseille soaps and bath bombs cover the scented-gift category.

On the food side, expect smoked and marinated fish, paprykarz szczeciński (the spiced fish paste that travels well), Polish, Lithuanian and Hungarian cured meats, honeys from different Polish regions, sękacz (the spiked tree cake), halva, hand-decorated gingerbread, chocolates and Christmas liqueurs in cherry, apricot, plum, pear, walnut and eggnog flavours. Traditional cold-pressed oils and flavoured coffees round it out. If you are furnishing your own Christmas table this year - or stocking a suitcase before flying home - this is one of the easiest places in Silesia to do it in one pass.

Katowice at Christmas: why it is worth the trip

Katowice is not the postcard Poland of Kraków or Gdańsk, and that is exactly its appeal. The region's industrial heritage gives the market a different backdrop: the Rynek is a modern remodelled square ringed by interwar and communist-era buildings, the flying-saucer Spodek arena looms a few minutes away, and the Silesian Museum sits in a former coal mine. The market's own scale - two Ferris wheels, a full ice rink, over a hundred stalls - matches cities twice its tourist traffic, which translates to shorter queues and lower prices than the famous markets.

It is also the most accessible big market for the two million people of the Silesian conurbation: from Gliwice, Sosnowiec, Zabrze or Tychy the Rynek is a direct tram or bus ride, and the metropolitan ticket covers the trip.

The Nikiszowiec market: 11-13 December

The second Katowice market happens over one December weekend in Nikiszowiec, the listed red-brick workers' estate that is one of Silesia's most distinctive historic districts. The Jarmark na Nikiszu runs 11-13 December 2026, with stalls selling Christmas table dishes, crafts and drinks among the familoks. It is small compared to the Rynek fair but arguably the more atmospheric of the two - the brick architecture does half the decorating for free. Nikiszowiec is a short bus or tram ride from the centre (see our Katowice public transport guide for tickets and zones).

With children

This is one of the more family-friendly big markets. The electric train and carousel are the staples; the new Stajnia Mikołaja adds an interactive skill game built around Christmas challenges, and the fairy-tale huts - interactive scenes with characters from classic animations - are designed for the under-tens. The "bear family" installation is the designated photo stop. The ice rink runs from 9:00 daily, well before the stalls get busy, so a morning skate followed by hot chocolate in the Sfera Bar dome is the civilised way to do a weekend visit with kids. Polish markets open their stalls late by West European standards, so plan around the 10:00 start rather than arriving early.

Weather and when to go

Late-November and December evenings in Katowice hover around freezing, and the Rynek's open layout offers little shelter - dress for standing still outdoors, not for walking. The upside of the long season: if the pre-Christmas weekends look overwhelming, the market keeps its full hours through the quiet week between Christmas and New Year and into early January, when crowds thin considerably but the wheels, rink and food zone all still run. The 31 December hours even stretch selected stalls to 2:00 for anyone building a Sylwester evening around the square.

Getting there and practical tips

  • Location. The main market fills the Rynek, Katowice's central square, which sits on top of the city's main tram and bus interchange - virtually every ZTM line gets you there. From Kraków, trains to Katowice station take around an hour and the Rynek is a ten-minute walk from the platforms.
  • Driving? The market area is inside the paid parking zone; read our Katowice parking guide before leaving the car, and honestly, take the tram.
  • Timing. Weekday afternoons are quietest; Friday to Sunday evenings and the weekends before Christmas are the peak. The food zone runs until 22:00 daily, so a late visit works.
  • Money. Cards are widely accepted at stalls, but carry some cash for the smallest vendors.
  • Make a day of it. The market pairs well with the Silesian Museum, the Spodek arena and a Nikiszowiec walk - and from Katowice airport arrivals, our airport-to-city guide covers the bus and train options.

How it compares with the other big markets

Katowice's market is the longest-running of the Polish big-city fairs this season (20 November to 10 January) and the only one spreading across two squares. It is less touristy than Kraków (27 November to early January) and smaller than Wrocław (20 November to 7 January), but the double Ferris wheel, the ice rink and the Nikiszowiec weekend give it a character of its own. Warsaw (20 November to 6 January) and Gdańsk (20 November to 23 December) round out the big five - all free to enter.
