Kraków Christmas Market 2026: Dates, Opening Hours and What to Expect
The essentials: The 2026 Kraków Christmas Market on Rynek Główny is planned for 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with the organizer noting it may run to 6 January; the city's Karta Krakowska lists 6 January. Stalls trade 10:00-20:00 daily and entry is free.

Every year from late November, the wooden stalls go up on Kraków's Main Market Square and the city's biggest outdoor event of the winter begins. The Jarmark Bożonarodzeniowy (Christmas Fair) on Rynek Główny is one of the largest and oldest Christmas markets in Poland, and the 2026 edition is now officially being planned. Here is what is confirmed so far, what the dates mean in practice, and how to get the most out of a visit.
Dates: 27 November 2026 to early January 2027
The market's organizer, Artim, acting for the Krakowska Kongregacja Kupiecka (Kraków Merchants' Congregation), has published its 2026 trader invitation. It states the fair on the Main Square is planned from 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with the invitation noting it may run to 6 January 2027 (Epiphany) instead. The city's Karta Krakowska events card currently lists the market to 6 January, so treat 3 January as the conservative end date and check again closer to the time if you are planning a visit in the first week of January.
The opening day falls on the Friday after the last Sunday of November, the market's traditional start. For comparison, last season's market ran 28 November 2025 to 1 January 2026 with around 105 kiosks, so the 2026 dates follow the usual pattern.
Opening hours
The organizer's trader regulations set stall trading hours at 10:00 to 20:00 daily. In past seasons stalls in practice opened earlier and food stands stayed open later, especially on December weekends, but 10:00-20:00 is the only confirmed figure for 2026 so far. If you want the market at its quietest, weekday mornings are your window; Saturday evenings in mid-December are the most crowded hours of the entire year on the square.
Entry is free. The market is open-air and unfenced, so you can wander in from any side of the square.
A market with eight centuries of trading behind it
The fair's setting is the point. Rynek Główny has functioned as a trading square since Kraków received its city rights in 1257, and the organizer describes the Christmas fair as a return to that original purpose of the square. The same company behind the market, Artim, has been running events on the square since 1987 - the Christmas fair, the Easter fair, the summer craft market and the St Michael's fair - and co-organizes the folk performances that accompany them, with regional Małopolska dance and music groups appearing on the market stage through the season.
What the stalls sell
The organizer's invitation lists the preferred assortment, which gives a good preview of what you will actually find: Christmas ornaments and decorations, wreaths and stroiki (traditional decorative arrangements), baubles, souvenirs, stationery and books, toys, ceramics, handmade craft items, natural jewellery and minerals, confectionery and food products, wooden and wicker goods, candles, postcards and decorative articles.
The genuinely Kraków-flavoured things to look for:
- Hand-painted glass baubles - Poland is one of Europe's biggest producers, and the market stalls carry far better quality than the tourist shops on the side streets.
- Bolesławiec pottery - the distinctive blue-stamped ceramics make sturdy, packable gifts.
- Oscypek - smoked sheep's cheese from the Tatra mountains, served grilled with cranberry sauce. It is a protected regional product and the market is a reliable place to try it.
- Szopki - miniature nativity cribs modelled on Kraków's spires, the city's signature folk craft (more on those below).

Food and drink
Food stalls cluster toward the Sukiennice (Cloth Hall) side of the square. Expect the Polish winter-market classics: grilled kiełbasa, pierogi, bigos (hunter's stew), potato pancakes, roasted chestnuts, and grzaniec - mulled wine - sold in souvenir cups. Prices at last season's market were reported by the Polish Press Agency as noticeably higher than in ordinary milk bars and cafés, which is normal for a prime-location Christmas market; budget roughly restaurant prices for hot food. Card payment is widely accepted at stalls, but having some złoty cash helps at the smallest kiosks.
The szopka nativity crib contest: Thursday 3 December
The market's most distinctive day is not about shopping at all. The 84th Konkurs Szopek Krakowskich, the annual competition for Kraków's extraordinary handmade nativity cribs, takes place on Thursday 3 December 2026 on the Main Square, according to the schedule published by the Museum of Kraków:
- 10:00-12:00 - makers present their szopki at the Adam Mickiewicz monument, right in the middle of the market
- 12:00 - a parade of the cribs around the square, before they move to the Krzysztofory Palace
- 6 December, 14:00 - results announced in the adult, youth and "OFF" categories at the Krzysztofory Palace (Rynek Główny 35)
- 13 December, 14:00 - results in the school, children and family categories
- 9 December 2026 to 28 February 2027 - the post-competition exhibition of this year's szopki at the Krzysztofory Palace
Szopki are on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list, and the Thursday-morning presentation around the Mickiewicz statue is one of the most photogenic events of the Polish winter. If you can only visit the market once, the morning of 3 December is the moment to pick. Registration for makers runs 1-30 November 2026 through the museum's website.
Smaller fairs around the city
The Main Square market is the headline, but it is not the only one. The Karta Krakowska listings for the season include:
- Mały Rynek (the Small Market Square, one block east of the main square) - a Christmas fair planned 30 November 2026 to 6 January 2027
- Plac św. Marii Magdaleny (St Mary Magdalene Square, by the foot of Wawel hill) - a smaller fair planned 30 November 2026 to 3 January 2027
Both are calmer alternatives when the main market is heaving, and Mały Rynek in particular has become a food-and-craft fair in its own right in recent seasons.
Practical tips for visitors
Getting there. The market is on Rynek Główny in the pedestrianised Old Town. From Kraków Główny, the main train station, it is a 10-15 minute walk down Planty or through the underpass toward Floriańska street. Trams do not enter the Old Town; the closest stops ring the Planty park. Do not plan to drive: the Old Town is a restricted traffic zone.
Crowds. Friday to Sunday afternoons in December are packed shoulder to shoulder. Weekday mornings and the period right after 27 November are far calmer. If you are visiting with children or a pram, go before lunch.
Mikołajki. St Nicholas Day, 6 December, falls inside the market run and is when Polish children receive small gifts. Expect stalls to lean into it that weekend and families to be out in force.
Weather. Late-November Kraków averages around 0-5 °C, often damp. The square is fully exposed, so dress for standing still outdoors; the mulled wine helps.
If you live here. Kraków's expats tend to use the market the way locals do: as a meeting point rather than a shopping destination. Agree on a stall near the Sukiennice arches, do one slow lap with something hot, and leave the serious gift-buying for a weekday morning. The market is also the easiest place all year to pick up presents to post home - baubles, pottery and wooden toys all travel well.
Combining the trip. The market pairs naturally with Wawel Castle (ten minutes on foot) and the Wieliczka Salt Mine - but note Wieliczka is closed on 24-25 December. The city's other Christmas traditions are covered in our guides to Poland's 2026 Christmas markets across Wrocław, Gdańsk and Kraków, Kraków in winter, the szopka nativity crib tradition, and Wigilia, Polish Christmas Eve.
