The Christmas tree on Bydgoszcz's Old Town Market Square at dusk, January 2015

The only Christmas market in Poland built on a bridge is back. The Bydgoski Jarmark Świąteczny strings its wooden huts across the Brda river between the Old Town square and Theatre Square, and for 2026 the dates and stall hours are already official. If you live in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian region - or want a quieter alternative to the giant markets of Wrocław and Kraków - here is the full picture.

Dates and hours: 20 November to 21 December 2026

The City of Bydgoszcz, which organizes the market with the Myślęcinek forest-park cultural centre as its operational partner, confirms the 2026 edition runs from Friday 20 November to Monday 21 December 2026. Stalls open daily at 13:00 and trade:

  • Sunday-Thursday: 13:00-20:00
  • Friday-Saturday: 13:00-21:00

The hours come from the 2026 market regulations; the city reserves the right to flex them with visitor numbers, especially in the evenings. Entry is free. Because the market ends on Monday 21 December - stalls are dismantled the next morning - the last weekend before Christmas, 19-20 December, is your final chance for market shopping. Sunday 20 December is also a trading Sunday, so regular shops in the centre are open too.

One market, three stops, and a bridge

The Bydgoszcz market is a short, scenic walking route rather than a single square. It starts on the Stary Rynek (Old Town Market Square), where the craft huts and the big Christmas tree stand, runs down Mostowa Street, crosses the Most Staromiejski bridge - where stalls literally line the bridge over the Brda, a setup the city bills as unique in Poland - and ends on plac Teatralny on the other side. The whole route is a few hundred metres, a fifteen-minute stroll, and from the bridge you get the classic Bydgoszcz view: the old granaries on the river and Mill Island.

Practical opening-weekend notes: on Friday 20 November stalls open at 13:00 and run until 21:00. In previous years the opening weekend brought the lighting of the big tree on the Stary Rynek and the illuminations along Mostowa and the bridge, making opening evening the most atmospheric - and most crowded - moment of the season. For a calmer visit, go on Saturday 21 November early in the afternoon. The hour of this year's ceremony will be announced separately.

What is on the stalls

The city has published its list of around 30 selected vendors for 2026, and it splits neatly in two:

  • Food (Mostowa Street and the bridge area). The offer leans regional: Kuyavian specialities, fish and traditional Polish dishes, with a pierogi stand, a Greek bistro and several caterers on the list, plus honeys from the vendors' own apiaries and smoked oscypek cheese from the mountains.
  • Crafts (Stary Rynek). Handmade plush toys and Christmas wreaths, baubles, warm hats from Nepal and Zakopane, stainless-steel jewellery, gift sets and small-manufactory cosmetics.

The regulations distinguish between stalls selling the exhibitor's own handiwork and mass-produced goods, and the city picks the final list itself - the result is a small but fairly carefully curated market. Prices are not published. One regulation worth knowing: vendors are not allowed to play music at their stalls, which keeps Bydgoszcz's market noticeably calmer than the big-city fairs.

A market made for photos and gifts

Two details make Bydgoszcz's market punch above its size. The first is the setting: the illuminations along Mostowa and the bridge reflect in the Brda, and the best shots of the season are taken from the middle of the Staromiejski bridge towards the granaries, or from the Stary Rynek towards the town hall after dark. The second is the shopping: because the city curates the craft stalls itself and favors genuine handiwork over mass stock, this is a good market for actual presents - local honeys, Kuyavian cold cuts and preserves, hand-made baubles and wreaths. The river theme runs through it all: Bydgoszcz grew on Brda trade, and the 18th-century Bydgoszcz Canal linked the Vistula and Oder basins, which is why the granaries you see from the bridge stand where they do.

Music and performances

Bydgoszcz is a UNESCO Creative City of Music, and the market programme reflects it. The city has invited local soloists and groups of up to five to perform in the small amphitheatre on the Staromiejski bridge, with larger ensembles using open space around the market. The concert schedule and performer names are still to come. Last year's edition (December 2025) also brought a 43-metre Ferris wheel, a Venetian carousel, a small roller coaster, a children's train, a 13-metre animated Christmas pyramid and a Rudolph the Reindeer mascot - which of those return in 2026 will be confirmed with the programme. For an evening add-on, check the December repertoires of the Opera Nova and the Pomorska Philharmonic, both a short walk from the market.

Getting there and practical tips

  • From Bydgoszcz Główna station. The Stary Rynek is about 2 km from the main station - roughly a 25-minute walk, or a short tram or bus ride into the centre. Jakdojade covers the network.
  • Driving. You cannot park at the market itself: the regulations ban parking on the Stary Rynek, and stall deliveries happen only in the morning and after closing. Leave the car outside the tight centre and walk in.
  • Timing. Stalls open at 13:00 every day, so there is no morning market here. Dusk falls around 15:30 in December; arriving between 15:00 and 17:00 gives you daylight for the stalls and the lights for the walk back. Friday and Saturday evenings and opening weekend are the busiest.
  • With children. The square and Mostowa are cobbled, and the bridge gets tight at peak times - weekday afternoons are easiest with a stroller. See the music note above: no stall loudspeakers makes this a genuinely family-friendly market.
  • Pair it with Toruń. Toruń is about 50 km away with frequent trains, and its market also opens on 20 November - gingerbread in Toruń in the morning, the bridge market by the Brda in the evening. See our Toruń market guide and Bydgoszcz weekend guide.

Make a weekend of it

If you stay over, spend the market-free morning outside the centre: the Myślęcinek forest park (the market's organizational partner) has a zoo and botanical garden for a winter walk with children, and history fans can visit the Exploseum, a route through a former German explosives factory hidden in the forest. Back in town, Mill Island, the Rother's Mills exhibition centre, the tightrope-walker sculpture over the Brda and the Museum of Soap and History of Dirt fill the afternoon until the stalls open. Accommodation on the Old Town or along Gdańska Street puts the market within walking distance; hotels by the river get the illumination views.

How it compares with the other 2026 markets

Bydgoszcz (20 November - 21 December) is one of five markets opening on the same Friday, 20 November, alongside Warsaw (to 6 January), Wrocław (to 7 January), Gdańsk (to 23 December) and Katowice (to 10 January). The season is completed by Kraków (27 November - early January), Szczecin (27 November - 22 December), Toruń (20 November - 20 December) and Lublin (17-20 December). All are free to enter; only Bydgoszcz puts its stalls on a bridge.
