Lublin Christmas Market 2026: Dates, Hours and Folk Traditions
The essentials: The Lublin Christmas Market 2026 runs from Thursday 17 to Sunday 20 December 2026 in the Old Town. Hours: Thu-Fri 14:00-20:00, Sat-Sun 11:00-20:00. Entry is free. It is a small folk-focused market with carollers, herody plays and straw-ornament workshops.

Poland's youngest big-city Christmas market is also its most folk. The Jarmark Świąteczny in Lublin returns for only its second edition this December - four days of wooden huts, carollers and straw-ornament workshops in one of the country's prettiest old towns. It is small, late in the season and deliberately traditional. Here is everything confirmed for 2026.
Dates and hours: 17 to 20 December 2026
The organizer, Warsztaty Kultury w Lublinie (Lublin's municipal culture centre), confirms the market runs from Thursday 17 to Sunday 20 December 2026 in Lublin's Old Town. Stall hours:
- Thursday-Friday (17-18 December): 14:00-20:00
- Saturday-Sunday (19-20 December): 11:00-20:00
That is a notably short season - four days, ending four days before Christmas Eve - so this is a market you plan deliberately, not one you stumble into. The market is part of the city's wider Festiwal Bożego Narodzenia (Christmas Festival) organized by the City of Lublin. Entry is free, and last year the ornament workshops in the market zone were free too. The 2026 exhibitor list was still being selected at the time of writing - the organizer's call for vendors closes 31 October 2026 - so the detailed event programme will follow later.
What to expect: craft first, no big rides
Lublin's market positions itself against the big commercial fairs. The organizer's own criteria for vendors say it plainly: original handmade goods, natural materials, high-quality regional food, and nothing you would find on the first supermarket shelf. Wooden huts (2.5 by 2 metres, lit, provided by the organizer) host folk artists, craftspeople and local food producers; the 2025 debut edition gathered around 30 exhibitors in 20 huts behind the Crown Tribunal on the Old Town square.
Do not expect Ferris wheels or skating-rink spectacle at the market itself - the draw here is the atmosphere: straw stars, hand-painted ornaments, honey and preserves from Lublin-region producers, and hot food and grzaniec at the gastro stalls. Prices are not published.
The folk programme (2025's edition, and what may return)
Last year's debut leaned hard into living tradition from the Lublin region and the Bug river borderlands. Whether every element returns in 2026 will be clear when the festival programme is published, but this is what made the first edition special:
- Chata Brodacza. A hut where visitors met the Brodacz of Sławatycze - a masked figure from a ritual tradition over a century old, in a handmade costume dense with symbolism. Evenings brought communal carolling from songbooks and herody performances: short, 15-minute nativity-play miniatures performed from a suitcase to an old accordion. Herody are old folk plays about King Herod in which good battles evil, and Death and the Devil walk on stage.
- The Wandering Carolers parade. Twelve costumed figures - Angels and Death, the Stork and the Devil, the Goat and the Bear - moved through the Old Town at the weekend, with folk bands singing old carols and pastorals from the Lublin region.
- Free ornament workshops. An open studio in a tent by the Tribunal ran sessions every 30 minutes (about half an hour each, up to 20 people, no sign-up), with separate registered workshops led by folk artists: straw angels, colourful stryszawskie birds, carol stars and double straw stars - ornaments still made in the villages around Lublin.
Around the market in December
The market sits in the middle of Lublin's Old Town, on and around the Rynek by the Crown Tribunal. In 2025 the same city festival added three more December stops that combine into one walk (2026 dates for these were not yet published at the time of writing):
- Ice rink on plac Litewski - last season it ran from 14 December to 14 February, daily 12:00-22:00, with a 5 zł ticket and skate, helmet and penguin-aid rental.
- A carousel on the Rynek - part of the Christmas illuminations, powered by an adult's muscle with a speed limiter; children under 7 ride with a guardian.
- The szopka (nativity scene) on plac Po Farze - from mid-December, with kindergartens, schools and choirs carolling; free entry.
In early December 2025 the city also staged Santa on 6 December and Christmas light mappings on the Kraków Gate and the Trinitarian Tower - worth watching for in this year's programme.

Why Lublin does Christmas differently
Eastern Poland's Christmas customs survived here more visibly than in the big western cities, and the market treats them as the main event rather than decoration. The herody plays, the straw craft and the figure of the Brodacz all come from the villages of the Lublin region and the Bug borderlands, where carolling processions with animal masks and star-bearers were still living memory when ethnographers began writing them down. For an expat used to the German-style markets of Wrocław or Kraków - mulled wine, baubles, big wheels - Lublin's version is a genuine change of register: smaller, stranger and more local. It also pairs naturally with the season's one fixed practical fact: the market weekend (19-20 December) is also the last trading-Sunday weekend before Christmas, so the whole city centre is open, not just the huts.
What to eat and bring home
Lublin's signature bake is the cebularz: a flat yeast cake topped with onion and poppy seed, a regional product protected at EU level (PGI). It tastes best fresh from a bakery on the Old Town or along Krakowskie Przedmieście. For gifts, the honest answer is anything handmade at the market itself - a straw star or painted bird from a folk artist's hut - plus honey and preserves from local producers. Last year the city even published its own official recipe for Lublin gingerbread with honey and rye flour as part of the festival.
Getting there and practical tips
- From Lublin station. The Old Town is about 2.5 km from the main station: take a bus or trolleybus towards plac Łokietka or Krakowskie Przedmieście, then walk through the Kraków Gate into the Old Town. From plac Litewski it is about 10 minutes on foot. Jakdojade covers Lublin's network; see our Lublin public transport guide for tickets and prices.
- From Warsaw. About two hours by train, so Lublin pairs easily with a Warsaw market trip.
- Driving. Leave the car outside the Old Town - most of its narrow streets are closed to traffic. For zone rates see our Lublin parking guide.
- Timing. With only four days, Saturday 19 December is the fullest: workshops from 11:00, carollers and performances through the day, illuminations after dark (around 15:30). Thursday and Friday afternoons are the quiet option.
- Cobbles. The Old Town is cobbled with a few steep stretches (especially by the Grodzka Gate); with a stroller keep to the Rynek and Bramowa Street.
Make a weekend of it
Lublin rewards an extra day. Start with the Underground Tourist Route from the Crown Tribunal, climb the Trinitarian Tower for the rooftops, then cross the Grodzka Gate to Lublin Castle and the Holy Trinity Chapel with its Byzantine-Rus frescoes. Our Lublin weekend guide has the full itinerary, including Majdanek. Note that 20 December 2026 is also a trading Sunday, so regular shops are open that day too.
How it compares
Lublin's is the shortest and smallest of the markets we track this season, and the only one built around folk tradition rather than scale. The full 2026 set: Warsaw (20 November - 6 January), Wrocław (20 November - 7 January), Kraków (27 November - early January), Gdańsk (20 November - 23 December), Katowice (20 November - 10 January), Szczecin (27 November - 22 December), Toruń (20 November - 20 December) and Lublin (17-20 December). All are free to enter.

Frequently asked questions
When is the Lublin Christmas market in 2026?
From Thursday 17 to Sunday 20 December 2026 in Lublin's Old Town. It is a short, four-day market - the last Thursday-to-Sunday before Christmas.
What are the opening hours?
Thursday and Friday 14:00-20:00, Saturday and Sunday 11:00-20:00, per the organizer Warsztaty Kultury w Lublinie.
Is the Lublin Christmas market free?
Yes, entry is free. Last year the drop-in ornament workshops in the market zone were free as well; the detailed 2026 programme is due later in the season.
What makes Lublin's market different from Kraków's or Wrocław's?
Scale and focus. Lublin keeps it small (about 30 exhibitors in 20 wooden huts in the 2025 debut) and builds the programme around living folk tradition: the Brodacz ritual figure, herody nativity plays, a costumed carollers' parade and free straw-ornament workshops, rather than big rides and attractions.
Is there an ice rink in Lublin in December?
Last season the city rink on plac Litewski ran from 14 December to 14 February, daily 12:00-22:00, with a 5 zł ticket. The 2026/27 season dates had not been published when this article was written - check the city's festival pages in December.
