Zakopane Christmas Market 2026: A Month Under the Tatras

The essentials: Zakopane's Christmas market runs 26 November to 30 December 2026 on Plac Niepodleglosci by Krupowki - over a month this year, up from a mid-December start in 2025. Entry is free; 2026 hours and the programme are still to be announced by the city.

Every Polish Christmas market has huts and grzaniec; only one has the Tatras behind them. Zakopane's Jarmark Bożonarodzeniowy returns to Plac Niepodległości, a step off Krupówki, and this year the city is starting it much earlier than usual: instead of the mid-December opening of recent seasons, the market runs for over a month, through all of Advent. For expats planning a winter trip to the mountains, that changes the calendar - the last weekend of November now works for a market-plus-peaks trip.

Dates: 26 November to 30 December 2026

The city announced on 11 September 2026 that the market opens on Thursday 26 November 2026 and runs daily until Wednesday 30 December 2026. The first full weekend is 28-29 November. Last season the market only started on 12 December, so the 2026 edition is significantly longer. One thing to know up front: opening hours for 2026 have not been published yet - last season stalls opened daily from 11:00, and the detailed programme and attractions list is still to come from the city. Entry is free (last year's edition was unticketed). If Zakopane is on your winter list anyway - for skiing, a spa weekend or the New Year - the earlier opening means the market now covers nearly every December trip, not just the Christmas week itself.

The market ends on 30 December, so there are no stalls on New Year's Eve itself - more on Zakopane's Sylwester below.

The market: small, highland and very edible

Zakopane's market is compact - just over 20 stalls last season - but its backdrop is unmatched: on a clear day the Tatras rise behind the huts. The stalls lean into Podhale's own produce rather than generic market stock: regional cheeses, highland honey, smoked meats, wool and wooden crafts, Christmas decorations and hot food. Last season's square also had light installations, a Christmas tree and an illuminated carousel that was the main children's draw.

The 2025/26 programme (treat as a guide to the shape, not a confirmed 2026 line-up) brought highland folk bands such as Kapela Huzary and Kapela Dziewięćsił to the square, plus a school nativity play, communal carolling, a knights' brotherhood performance and a stop of Radio ZET's Christmas Convoy. The 2026 programme will be announced closer to opening.

The oscypek rule

Grilled oscypek - the smoked sheep's-milk cheese of Podhale, served hot with cranberry - is the market's signature bite, and Zakopane is the place to learn the difference between the real thing and a lookalike. Authentic oscypek carries EU protected designation status and is made from sheep's milk (the shepherding season runs spring to autumn, which is why winter supplies are precious). If you are buying cheese to take home, ask the vendor about the designation and the milk. Other good edible souvenirs: bryndza (the soft sheep cheese), bundz, highland honey and żentyca, the sour sheep's-milk drink for the brave.

Krupówki and Równia Krupowa in December

The market plugs straight into Zakopane's winter street life. Krupówki - the kilometre-long pedestrian strip climbing from the Nowotarska junction - gets its Christmas lighting in December, and the karczmy (highland inns), shops and oscypek stands run into the evening. Next to the market square lies Równia Krupowa, the big open ground between Krupówki and Kościuszki street, where the city stages its large outdoor events. Note two local rules that surprise visitors: trading on Górna and Dolna Równia Krupowa is banned outside designated zones, and fireworks are banned in public places in Zakopane - the city does not put on a municipal show. Last year's New Year's Eve was a ticketed free concert on Górna Równia Krupowa (gates 18:00, regional bands first, main concert from 19:00); the 2026 edition has not been announced.

Getting there without the traffic jam

  • Train. The smartest option in December. Trains from Kraków reach Zakopane in around three and a half hours, and the PKP station on Kościuszki street is a 10-15 minute walk from Plac Niepodległości - crucially, the train sails past the weekend traffic jams on the zakopianka road. Buses from Kraków are frequent and cheaper but sit in the same traffic as cars.
  • Car. The centre is a paid-parking zone and December weekend spaces are scarce. Last season the city directed visitors to the Park & Ride at Chramcówki 35 (140 spaces, entrance from Smrekowa street), a short walk from the station and centre. Winter tires are strongly advisable on Podhale's roads.
  • Within town. Our Zakopane transport guide covers the city buses that reach Kuźnice (for Kasprowy) and the valleys.

A winter day, built around the market

Morning: ride the cable car to Kasprowy Wierch or the funicular to Gubałówka for the panorama - December sun on the snow-covered Tatras is the best possible warm-up, but buy Kasprowy tickets online in advance because weekend box-office queues are long. Midday: back down for lunch in a karczma and an hour in the Muzeum Tatrzańskie or at Willa Koliba, the first house in the Zakopane style. Dusk falls around 15:45 in December, so arrive at the market by about 14:45 to watch the lights come on. Evening: the Termy Zakopiańskie pools in town, or book a kulig - a torch-lit horse sleigh ride with a bonfire, the classic Zakopane winter evening, bookable through several operators in town.

If you are hiking rather than skiing, treat December as full winter: check the TOPR avalanche bulletin before any trail, take crampons, and keep to the valleys (Dolina Strążyska is the easy classic) unless you have winter experience.

Christmas under the Tatras

The market closes on 30 December, but highland Christmas carries on. In the days around the holidays you will hear pastorałki - the Podhale carols sung to fiddle accompaniment - in churches and karczmy, and after Christmas, kolędnicy (carollers) still go house to house with a star and the turoń, the shaggy festival beast of Polish folklore. If you spend Christmas Eve in Zakopane, the midnight pasterka at the parish Church of the Holy Family on Krupówki is the trip's most atmospheric hour for many visitors - arrive early, because the churches under Giewont fill to capacity on the holidays.

Weather and what to wear

Zakopane sits at about 850 metres, and December there is proper mountain winter: expect temperatures between -10 and 0°C, snow on the ground more often than not, and wind that finds every gap. Dress warmer than you would for a city market - insulated boots with grip for the packed snow on Krupówki, gloves you can eat oscypek in, and a hat. The market's hot drinks (grzaniec, hot beer, highland tea with raspberry syrup) exist for a reason.

Make it a market double

The natural pairing is Kraków: the Main Square market opens on 27 November, one day after Zakopane's, so the last weekend of November gives you both. Our Kraków Christmas market guide and Zakopane winter weekend guide have the logistics. The rest of this year's set: Warsaw (20 November - 6 January), Poznań (14 November - 6 January), Wrocław (20 November - 7 January), Gdańsk (20 November - 23 December), Katowice (20 November - 10 January), Bydgoszcz (20 November - 21 December), Toruń (20 November - 20 December), Szczecin (27 November - 22 December), Opole (27 November - 23 December), Lublin (17-20 December) and Rzeszów (4 December - 6 January).

Frequently asked questions

When is the Zakopane Christmas market in 2026?

Thursday 26 November to Wednesday 30 December 2026 - over a month, and much earlier than last season's 12 December start.

Where is it held?

On Plac Niepodległości, right next to Krupówki, a few minutes' walk from Równia Krupowa and 10-15 minutes from the train and bus stations.

What are the opening hours?

Not yet published for 2026. Last season the stalls opened daily from 11:00; the city will announce detailed hours and the programme closer to opening.

Is entry free?

Yes. Last year's edition was unticketed and nothing suggests a change; you pay for food, drinks and the carousel.
