Poznan Christmas Market 2026: Dates, Zones and the Ice Festival
The essentials: Poznan's Betlejem Poznanskie 2026 opens in three zones: the fairgrounds (MTP) on 14 November, Plac Wolnosci on 20 November and the Old Market Square on 21 November, with the two city-centre markets running to 6 January 2027 and free entry throughout.

Poznań does not wait for Advent. While most Polish Christmas markets open in the last week of November, Betlejem Poznańskie fires its first zone in mid-November and then spends nearly two months rolling festive across three separate locations. For expats in Wielkopolska - or anyone doing a market tour of Poland this season - Poznań is where the season starts, and the only city on our list where the market comes with an international ice-sculpture festival in the middle. Here is what the organizers have confirmed for 2026/27.
Dates: three zones, three openings
Betlejem Poznańskie is not one market but three, each with its own opening day:
- Międzynarodowe Targi Poznańskie (MTP, the fairgrounds): Saturday 14 November to Sunday 20 December 2026. The earliest start of any big Polish market this season. The Christmas town here has a food zone, craft and gift stalls and a family attractions programme.
- Plac Wolności: Friday 20 November 2026 to Wednesday 6 January 2027. The classic city-centre market with the exhibitor zone and Christmas attractions.
- Stary Rynek (Old Market Square): Saturday 21 November 2026 to Wednesday 6 January 2027. The most atmospheric of the three, wrapped around the Renaissance town hall, with an open-air ice rink and, in mid-December, the Poznań Ice Festival. (The city's own news article gives 20 November for this zone in one passage, while the official site banner and the published schedule say 21 November - treat the first day as approximate.)
Entry to all three zones is free; you pay for the attractions (wheel, rink, carousels) and whatever you buy. One gap to know: opening hours for 2026 have not been announced yet as of late October - check the official site closer to opening day.
Plac Wolności: the funfair zone
Plac Wolności is the funfair heart of Betlejem. In 2025 the big draw was a Ferris wheel with views over the lit-up centre, flanked by carousels and the huts selling food, crafts and decorations (2025 layout - the 2026 exhibitor list is still being assembled). The square sits on the main shopping streets a few minutes' walk from the Old Market, which makes it the natural first grzaniec stop after work. Expect this to be the liveliest zone on weekend evenings.
Stary Rynek: rink, town hall and the Ice Festival
The Old Market Square market wraps around the Renaissance town hall - the one with the two mechanical billy goats that butt heads at noon every day, which alone is worth timing your visit for. The open-air ice rink returns to the square for 2026, set among the painted tenements.
The headline event is the POZnań Ice Festival, Friday 11 to Sunday 13 December 2026 - the 20th edition of the international ice-sculpture competition, which turns the square into an open-air sculptors' workshop. The organizers promise a jubilee setting and "even more ice magic". If you can pick any single weekend of the Poznań season, this is the one: watching competition sculptures grow out of raw ice blocks is the most distinctive December spectacle in the city.
MTP: the earliest market in Poland this season
The fairgrounds zone opens on 14 November, weeks before Advent, and runs only to 20 December - so it is the one to visit first, and the one you will miss if you leave Poznań for late December. Grupa MTP promises Santa's House, a Venetian carousel, concerts and workshops, with stalls leaning into local food and regional crafts. Practical bonus: the fairgrounds sit right beside Poznań Główny, the main railway station, so this is the most convenient market in Poland for anyone arriving by train.
What to eat: grzaniec in a souvenir mug, and the croissant with a passport
The centre markets pour grzaniec (mulled wine, also alcohol-free) - last season it came in collectible souvenir mugs, a small Poznań tradition worth hunting for. Beyond the standard market menu, look for rogal świętomarciński, the St Martin's croissant filled with white poppy seed: it carries an EU protected geographical indication, it belongs to 11 November (St Martin's Day), and certified Poznań bakeries sell it through the whole season. Our rogal świętomarciński guide explains how to spot a certified one. Prices for 2026 are not published.

A survival guide to the local dialect
Poznań has its own dialect, gwara poznańska, and the market is where you will hear it. Five words get you through an evening: bimba (a tram - hence the decorated "Świąteczna bimba", the Christmas tram that ran through the city last season), pyry (potatoes), plyndze (potato pancakes), szneka z glancem (an iced yeast bun) and tytka (a paper bag). If a vendor asks "tytkę dać?", they are offering you a bag.
Beyond the stalls
Last season the city dressed up a Christmas tram, lit the municipal tree ceremonially on 6 December 2025, and ran a contest for the best-decorated shop windows. Details of the 2026 editions will appear on the official Betlejem site; the illuminated tram is worth watching for on December evenings. The markets themselves run through the gap between Christmas and New Year - unlike Gdańsk or Opole, Poznań's two centre zones stay open until Epiphany, and the season traditionally closes around the Three Kings' Day concert in early January.
Getting there and practical tips
- By train. Arrive at Poznań Główny and you are already at the MTP zone. Plac Wolności is a 10-15 minute walk up Święty Marcin street; the Old Market is another ten minutes on foot along Paderewskiego. Trams cover all three - useful stops are Marcinkowskiego and Fredry for Plac Wolności. Our Poznań transport guide has current fares.
- By car. The Old Town is a paid-parking zone and December weekend spaces go fast - see our Poznań parking guide. For the MTP market, use the fairgrounds' own car parks.
- One-afternoon plan. Start at MTP straight from the train, walk up to Plac Wolności for the wheel at dusk, then finish on the Old Market for the rink and dinner in one of the tenement restaurants.
- Crowds. Weekdays before about 16:00 are the calmest; the square is at its prettiest after dark, which in December means around 15:45. December weekends and the Ice Festival weekend are the busiest.
- With children. MTP (Santa's House, carousel, workshops, flat ground for strollers) and Plac Wolności (carousels) are the family picks; bring gloves for the Old Market rink.
- If you want all three zones in one day, come before 20 December - after that, only the two centre markets remain.
Make a weekend of it
Poznań rewards a second day: Ostrów Tumski (Cathedral Island) with the oldest cathedral in Poland, the Imperial Castle, the Stary Browar art-and-shopping centre in a converted brewery, and the Croissant Museum if the rogal bug bites. Our Poznań weekend guide has the full itinerary.
